Air filter change at 16k.
Have just changed my air filter today after LR carried out my first service on the D4 this week.
Looking at the old filter I'm quite glad I did.
For the cost of a filter for around £8 it's definitely worth doing every service.
LR's change at 32k is a little optimistic for maintaining good fuel consumption.
D4 2016 Landmark, Waitomo Grey.
D3 2005 HSE, Bonatti Grey, now sold but still comes back for servicing.
Defender 2002 Td5 Commercial, had a hard life but slowly being restored.
I only work so I can afford to repair my Land Rovers!

That looks quite dirty.
I've always said that basic servicing costs (oil change, oil and air filters) disappear when compared to the other running costs of a car. For much less than the price of a tank of fuel and 30 minutes of your time why wouldn't you carry out that basic stuff every 6k miles? My last oil and filter change made no difference to the running cost of my D4 measured to the nearest p. The cost would be even more insignificant as I start to rack up the miles and fuel becomes the dominant expense.
Just do it, then you will have peace of mind that a decent oil is pumping round your engine.D1 300Tdi - gone
D2 Td5 ES (Alive remapped...mmm) - sadly gone

DOes a new air filter increase MPG do you think, or just make it run better?

An air filter has to be amazingly bad to have any noticeable effect on a cars power, mpg is the main benefit.
Years ago truck air filters were always filthy and being replaced all over the place, now its annually and approx 150k and they are not even that dirty!
I think a lot of it is how the air is routed to the filter, a lot of older vehicles got their air from under the bonnet now its routed carefully from the outside to the filter.

Very easy, even I did it! Just dont drop the screws into the engine bay MY2012 D4 HSE Nara Bronze with some extra stuff
Maybe the technical gurus will tell us. I'd love to know the technical reasoning.
An engine burns fuel & breathes air - lots if it. A precise amount of fuel per volume of air
To my humble reasoning for all the journies you do, wanting a high if not higher mpg that stays there service to service - an air filter allowing air to be drawn into the engine is a critical component.
It's got to have a "new" to "needs changing" life that affects performance approaching the bugggered state
Also it has to some extent to depend in where the vehicle is used...dusty conditions (that I see more than most, working near dusty quarries most days) has got to be a factor - what's on my paintwork is also in my air filter.
I realise a modern air filter pleated paper - had a massive surface area, when one bit gets dirty thecsircflow moves elsewhere.
I think the Disco uses a MAF (mass airflow sensor) that measures the air volume coming in & balances this with fuel....experts please explain....an occluded or blocked air filter has to have some effect ?
To me an air filter is low cost maintenance - mines been done every serviceBREXIT - done properly.

I assume you don't take the screws all the way out ? Just enough to disconnect top lid? Does the filter slide out sideways? TaVisitor from fullfatrr.com

I just did mine on my RRS. Same filter as LR4 and I could lift the filter cover enough to slide out the filter without lifting the cover right off and having to disconnect the pipework.

When the D3/4 gets older these rust. Get a new set from Advanced Factors and save the best as spares.2005, TDV6 S, Auto, 190k miles, owned from new, V8 Brake Upgrade, Nancom Evo, RLD protector, BAS EGR blanking & Remap, separate ATF cooler, changing all the fluids ahead of time.

Hi,
you could always start with the pollen filter first and build up to the Air filter
that's even easier and saves £££ from main dealer doing it

Yep, same here. Easy job when you know how. Can't believe they are not changed annually as standard! Will be on mine. Old one was a little grubbyVisitor from fullfatrr.com
