Rear propshaft wear and tear
After having some droning noise, but surprisingly no vibration from the driveshaft, i got to look at the center bearing. It was indeed halfway split, and very loose.
Figuring that perhaps the bearing as well may be fubar, ive ordered a replacement propshaft complete.
Now ive got the old one off (an amazing easy job i may add!) ive noticed the following.
1 obviously the center bearing rubber is split away.
2- the join at the center bearing has a fair amount of play, clacking back and forth and side to side.
3- the knuckle at the Transfer case side (front of prop) has a small amount of twist movement
4- the rear u joint is very stiff and is like a three position switch in both directions, it moves to a click in the middle, to a click one way to a click the other.
Now im pretty sure the u joint is fubar, (never known a u joint to be like this and be ok) but i wonder if the other parts with movement are bad, or is this normal on a driveshaft from a D3
Thanks in advance

Rear prop shaft has just been replaced, D3 is over ten years old, found on annual service. There was a pile of four on the garage floor that my LR indie had replaced over the past couple of weeks

Mine failed recently due to play in the front knuckle joint producing a horrendous knocking noise under acceleration, so loud that for a few seconds I thought it was a big end bearing gone. It came on very suddenly after a brief bout of more spirited driving than usual. There was no vibration and it proved quite difficult to track down as the actual amount of play in the joint when the car was standing still was very small. A new GKN OEM propshaft and the car is like new again.

Did you have a clunk when going from neutral to drive? Like it was taking up some slack. Also when applying throttle after lifting off? Thanks

Only a very slight one gobosoft, and occasionally. The symptoms i had were more of a droning noise on mid throttle. hard accel and lift off didnt have it.

Mine is at LR getting replaced now! Centre bearing is the culprit here. Mileage is 79k.
