Crankshaft failure

Hi All,

My D3 has suffered crankshaft failure. I have been offered a Jaguar engine and understand
it will fit the D3 using the LR sump and fuel rail, but I would like to double check if the bell
housing bolt pattern is identical. If anyone has fitted the Jaguar version I would appreciate
any advice.

Thanks and Happy Christmas to all members.

Welcome.

May I suggest you get a large mug of coffee, and then do two forum searches one for "crankshaft" and the other for "EuroJag".

This will throw up 10's of threads which will help you.

Other people on here are fitting jag engines.

Don't forget you will need to remove the 2 jag turbo's and fit the 1 disco turbo.

swap the dipstick tube over.

Thanks for your replies - since it failed last week I have
drunk many cups of coffee trawling the Forums, but this
issue has only just been spotted.

I have also called Disco Mikey and left a message for him
to call me. My plan is to buy a Jag engine from Eurojag
and have it fitted locally.

The mileage is 102K - full service history with engine oil and
filter changed 6 weeks ago. No warnings whatsoever, pulled
up at a traffic light after 50 mile journey, put my foot down
to pull away and the engine clanking started immediately.

I'll get another cup of coffee and do more trawling on the threads
kindly suggested.

Was done at a reputable Indi, have no reason to believe it was incorrectly fitted.
Car had done 1500 miles since oil change with no issues, and the oil level
post failure was showing full.

I'd remove the oil filter and have a look, look for signs of distortion to the filter.

Thanks for advice Washwipe, I'll get the guys to remove it
and have a look. Is this a known contributory factor in crank
failure?

I've also been researching whether these engines suffer the same
fate when fitted in Jaguars, very little info on this.

Incorrect filter fitting is definitely a contributing factor.

The problem with collating numbers of failures is the wide scattering of failed vehicle types, different dealers, independents, those that don't research, and perhaps either just accept the big bill and pay it, warranty companies, and of course those that just sell for scrap and walk away. I would think the best data on older out of manufacturer warranty vehicles is the warranty companies.

Thanks for the info Gareth,

It's quite ironical that this oil change was carried out by a different company to my usual servicing guys. However they came highly recommended and were a nice bunch of knowledgable guys in a very well equipped workshop full of Land Rovers, so I had no reason other than trust them.

How can the filter be fitted incorrectly ? would be worth knowing before we take it off.

Thanks Gareth,

Aaah I see the problem - I'll take some shots of the filter and post them once
the engine is out.
