Disco 4 Restricted Performance and Gearbox fault

Hi , first post on LR Forum. We are on our third Disco which is a 2010 6 speed auto Disco 4 HSE Diesel. Owned from new.

Land Rover has taken £1500 off us without being able to diagnose why we have had a restricted performance sign with yellow warning triangle. We have had the issue on and off for last few years but as the car drives perfectly have never been that bothered about it. In the end Land Rover said car needs to be driven more which is nonsense. It does 10000 miles a year which is more than enough and has so far covered 73,000 miles.

Move forward 2 years and we are now getting restricted performance sign intermittently and then later we get a gearbox fault yellow warning sign. It's intermittent and can drive for weeks fine and then hey presto warning lights.

Land Rover say they think it needs a transmission control module for circa £3500 fitted.

I've lost faith in their ability to fix their own cars and wonder if car is going into limp mode because of the initial restricted performance fault. Last thing we want is to spend £5,000 in total and the problems still there.

I suppose the question is is there any specialist in the U.K. who can fix an issue like this 100% without chasing their tails? Have no faith in the main dealers. Based in south east but happy to travel.

Thanks in advance Smile

Which dealer have you been using?

Guava (now Hunters Peasmarsh) seem decent with D4s. Have they told you what fault codes are being thrown up?

There are a few good specialists around the area with a bit of travelling.

Welwyn Land Rover. There were circa 30 fault codes. When cleared Gearbox position fault code was what convinced them a new TCM would cure her.

Just want to send it to someone competent. At the the moment car is driving perfectly again.

Here are what the two messages look like. No red triangles just yellow.

Any further thoughts welcome - so wish I'd kept extended warranty - seriously thinking about just letting her go and px for a brand where these gremlins do not occur (lost our brakes on our Disco 3 with kids in the car so could be worse I suppose!) Thumbs Up

As already mentioned, take it to another dealer and ask them to diagnose. Guava have a good reputation on here.

Alternatively, track down a local forum member with a Diagnostics tool like an IID that can read the fault codes etc. You could try contacting "Geoff." (With the dot) he's based in West Kent and may be able to help on that front.
LRs are a fond memory, apart from the maintenance.

This rather similar to a fault i have been experiencing (under warranty). Despite a lot of replacements it still happens occasionally but does not generate any fault codes. We currently think it is in fact just a warning (like the door open message) rather than a fault notification as there is no drop in performance, and the fault can't be produced on demand.

What a coincidence !
I have just had my 2 year service and up until now have had no issues whatsoever.
However since servicing on the 21st, last week, I have had the same warning come up three times.
The first time I pulled over, switched off and sat for a while scratching my head and it seems to have done the trick because when I switched on to pull away it was gone.
In the last seven days it has appeared again three times but although it states restricted performance there doesn't seem to be any change in the vehicle's behaviour so I haven't been back to the garage.
If it continues then it will have to be a visit to the garage just to give me peace of mind or is it something I should get sorted pretty toot sweet ?

I am based in Sawbridgeworth, Herts. ... not so far from welwyn. I have a nanocom so can read your fault codes for you. .. would certainly save the diagnostics costs of a main dealer while thinking caps go on as to what this is! !
Upgrades so far - , rear ladder from prospeed , front and rear light guards G4 style roof rack and 4 lightforce spots on the rack! Xenon lights

Is it just saying restricted performance or do you have the yellow engine sign as well?

If just restricted performance message, it sounds identical to the same issue I had a while back. It's a faulty fuel sensor housing. Probably best to get the codes read, but that would be my initial guess, unless you have other warnings too. It seems a very common problem on the D4.

I have exactly the same warning as your picture - the triangle and the warning Sad
If it doesn't appear during the next week I'll ignore it - or should I get it looked at ?

Cars driving well again for last week or so. The yellow engine sign only goes on when gearbox goes into limp mode which is very occasional normally when selecting reverse.

The fact the car runs perfectly most of the time is odd. Almost like there is loose connection or corrosion on some wiring to the TCM or maybe something else.

First time I've owned a car and not felt confident it can be cured. Sure the TCM will probably cure the gearbox going into limp mode but my fear is that it may be something to do with restricted performance warning sending the gearbox into limp mode. Even when gearbox TCM replaced we are still going to get the restricted performance warning with triangle from time to time with no fault codes. Thinking about getting it fixed then putting it back under main dealer warranty or just selling it - are the newer Disco 4s any better though?

If I'd taken the extended warranty think I would have forked out £5200 for 4 years so even after TCM replaced I'm still ahead. Electrical gremlins Big Cry

Harris Mayes Country Cars sorted this out for £1700. Very happy with their service. Humble workshops but put Land Rover Maindealers to shame. Won't walk into a maindealer again these guys are top notch Wink

I had similar symptoms on my first D4, a 2010, it turned out to be the crank shaft sensor.

Ours had already been diagnosed as needing new megatronic ECU by maindealer. HMCC ran diagnostics again and confirmed it needed new TCU. Land Rover wanted £4000 for this. They've already had £900 out of us for doing SFA at Welwyn LR. Bone idle useless bunch Evil or Very Mad
