Standard wheel nuts spinning

I've just arrived to try and help my mate change his rear brake pads but he's been unsuccessful in removing his wheels, the three standard nuts he tried to undo are all spinning after he thinks the tyre place did them up with an air gun.

I've read lots about the locking wheel nuts spinning but not the standard nuts, is there a way to remove them?

Rip off the stainless steel cover (punch a hole through it with a screw driver and tear it off) then use a 21 socket to get the nut off. Can't believe that LR put these things on everything. Although seems like a lot of other manufacturers do it as well. If you want to try and keep them from spinning don't use the standard wheel spanner, rather get a hex (six point) socket and breaker bar (not a bi hex socket, thats what tends to cause all the trouble). IIRC its a 22.

Get a large lump hammer and whack the end of the nut in (I can't remember if I used a punch as well, to avoid damaging the wheel) In my case it stopped the cap from spinning and aloud me to undo it. Just replace with a standard wheel nuts.

Good luck!

Can anybody explain the reason for this Special wheel nut?
Why is LR (and apparently other manufacturerers, too) using the nut with a cap?
