Air suspension help needed |
|
Hi all
Can anyone help? After a few minutes driving my suspension warning light comes on amber with the message - suspension fault normal height only, prior to the warning the suspension works but is slow on the front and occasionally gives the message suspension raising slowly. So far I have done the following:
Changed compressor- it was a second hand one which was previously working - I realise it could still be this but it is less likely as the fault is identical
Swapped the relay
Listened for leaks
Overhauled front valve block
Isolated battery overnight and no corner had lost any height
Any ideas?

Check the 70 amp fusible link in the engine compartment fuse box - mine was loose and needed to be squeezed a little

My alternator failed giving the same suspension fault. They go around the 80-100 mls mark. I found the fault because I realised that everytime I backed off coming down a hill I got a suspension fault. This is because the alternator does not unspool properly and leads to dramatic current variation.
Otherwise the usual-
Brake switch
Consistent manufacturers of the rear light bulbs on each side (must be the same)

Brett, it is not important that bulbs are all by the same manufacturer. What is important is you buy decent quality rather than cheap variants.
The brake bulb known issue is all to do with the element collapsing across the terminals and carrying on working but with erratic and changing resistance impedance. This has been known to drive the car haywire resulting in all sorts of warnings and failures.
It is not the all answering miracle fix that some think. Mods:

Thanks for the clarification - but I will pick you up on one of your own - every fix is a miracle!
btw nothing I noted would explain why the car would raise up again ... just for the record.

Thanks all I will check these out and respond in due course.
I replaced the alternator around a month before this started.

You need fault codes. As you get the "Suspension raises slowly" message appear it sounds like you don´t get enough help from the reservoir air tank. Have you checked for leaks (using soapy water)? Also it is common with bad wiring in the left side front wheel arch behind the plastic trim. Here you have amongst others the wires for the reseervoir valve that controls the function of the reservoir air tank.

It is having MOT on Wednesday and I will ask them to read the codes. I have sprayed some soapy water about and nothing obvious and no hissing from anywhere.

Hi all
Just a quick update on this suspension fault....I never did get the fault codes but I did purchase a compressor refurbishment kit off eBay for £55 and it has solved the problem. The kit included new o rings, new desicant, a new top flange for the dryer and new piston liners plus some plastic clamps for gripping the piston in a vice. I completed the overhaul indoors in about 1 hour (plus 1/2 hour to remove and 1/2 hour to replace).
You will need to use a vice to remove the piston ring and you will need to be brave when hammering the piston ring off, no special tools required other than a cheap torx set.
The job is easy enough for any DIY mechanic- technically not much more difficult than replacing brake shoes or pads.
