Engine clatter - replacement recommended by indy |
|
Hi all, long time not here!
Our 06 D3 (In France, 388 000 km!) started making a slight clattering noise (I reckon from the top LH of the engine, but could be wrong). The next day this got worse, and when SWMBO was going to collect the kids from school, she had a massive overheating and engine stop. The car was recovered to an indy, who is recommending an exchange engine at 12k EUR inc labour.
This seems excessively expensive to me, and I am concerned that he's not interested in trying to find another solution. I think there may be two independent faults - the noise and the overheating. We had a lower coolant pipe fail once before, and sincee the engine will still run, I wonder if this has happened again and that the clatter is just unrelated. During the day or so with the clatter, then engine still ran as it had before. Any ideas?
Also I am being quoted 5700 EUR for an exchange engine, plus fitting. Is this really the going rate? I would even consider shipping an engine from the UK to deprive the French rip-off merchants their mark-up!
I've read through a number of threads on engine replacement here, but it seems there's a lot of misinformation and ripping off going on!

Thanks, I'll try that. I might at least get some reliable advice!
I had thought of getting an engine sent here, but not really considered sending the car there.

... oh, and nice to see another old manual D3 owner on here. Ours is 2006, UK HSE spec but LHD manual. No (intentional) mods apart from EGR blanking and bash plate. 388 000 km (241 000 miles) and also Chawton white - I knew white lasted longer!

They were due to be replaced the week after the breakdown happened
The noise sounds more to me as though it's from somewhere at the top though. I should have recorded it, but didn't think of that time.
