D3 looked brakes/handbrake |
|
I've now owned å D3 for 3 weeks without any problems. Today i changed from winter to summer tires. After the change the wheels were completely looked. I used my IIDTool and deleted faults but still the wheels are looked. What can i do to unlook the brakes???

What size wheels did you remove and what size did you fit in their place?

My first thought too...
I can't imagine that changing wheels will cause the brakes to 'lock up' unless water was applied (washing, rinsing, etc.) and a sudden cold snap was experienced. LeighW

* first ran a bearing (design failure in original engine)
* second had a failure of the water outlet on top of the engine (pls check yours)

It might be an idea to jack up a front wheel first to see if it freely spins, then jack up a rear wheel and check if it spins. If the rear wheel does not spin and the front spins freely then as geoffsnook suggests pull the emergency brake release.
No point pulling the brake release cable if the front wheels won't spin.

I doubt very much if this was a diff or gearbox issue i think you will find the rear brake shoes have stuck on so fire away if you want to jack up the front to see if it will spin i think you will find it will and the rear brakes will be stuck on Discovery 3 se gone

I have now opened the small cover behind the P-brake button. But i can not see or feel any wire. Do all Disco3 have this wire? My car is a 2006 Disco 3.

Admirable's second link is better - LHD featured; sorry about the accent...
I had a 3 tonne caravan on the back and stopped for roadworks on a 5% slope and switched the engine off. Restarted and couldn't release the handbrake but seemed to remember the technique as shown in Admirable's first link. I thought I would break something as I tugged on the wire rope but eventually released it. Not before wife directed quite a number of cars around the 'stranded' LR.
Be brave, it does release! LeighW

Don't use the emergency release protocol as noted above - this will unspool the cable and you def. need a new one - they are expensive/ If you do below and clean the EBP properly at the hubs you will be good.
previous post
I recently had a problem with my Electronic Park Brake on my Discovery 3 which apparently is the same actuator and loom as the 4 and the various Range Rovers . Having snapped the manual release cable which apparently only works around 50% of the time I was stuck with the car in my garage requiring ‘go jacks’ to get it out and to the Stealer which was going to cost AUD500 and ruin my concrete/gravel driveway (go-jacks have steel wheels). I couldn’t find an emergency process anywhere online between the manual release process and severing the cable which would require an angle grinder or some serious bolt cutters. I then begged the Stealer to tell me how to disconnect the cable without having to sever it and definitely incur the significant replacement cost (in Aussie the Stealer quoted AUD1,750 to replace). I thought it would be useful to share this in case others had recovery or tool or parts availability issues. Once the rear wheel is off it only takes about 4-5 minutes with just a flat bladed screwdriver and a shifter and virtually zero mechanical skill.
Here goes:
1. Remove a rear wheel
2. The park brake cable enters through the front of the rear wheel assembly (at about 2-3 o’clock on the RHS or 9-10 o’clock on the LHS) into the park brake hub assembly. The EPB cable is the thickest of all the brake and sensor cables.
3. Remove the plastic dust cover which requires a 19mm spanner or shifter to loosen from the park brake hub assembly. Once off the thread push back up the cable to expose the outer cable/hub junction
4. At the junction there is a C-Clip … you may have to rotate the C-Clip to reveal the ‘space’ in the C-Clip.
5. If you are on the road/on sand/grass put down a blanket or a shirt under the assembly to catch the C-Clip (it is made of ‘springy’ metal and could go anywhere).
6. Take a flat bladed screw driver (if you can find one to bridge the gap across the ‘C’ that is ideal) … give the screw driver a light tap with something to remove the C-Clip.
7. Once the C-Clip is off the outer cable has nothing to retain it and it will ‘fall’ into the hub assembly about 1cm. This will be enough to de-stress the entire park brake system (both sides). Check the wheel can rotate a couple of cm.
8. Replace the plastic dust cover and lightly tighten with 19mm spanner/shifter. Replace wheel.
9. You may wish to jack up the other side and check the wheel can rotate freely by a couple of cm’s.
10. Drive away and don’t park on steep hills.
I think it is possible to do this without removing the rear wheel but it would be tight. For those that don’t know what a C-Clip is … it is a thin piece of metal in the shape of a C with 4 ‘lugs’ at 10, 2, 4 and 8 o’clock with cutout/space between 2 and 4 o’clock giving it the shape of a C. In this case it is about 2cm’s in diameter. It is pushed/tapped into a recess/seat around a cable with a slightly larger diameter.

You do not need a new cable if you use the emergency hand brake release it just needs to be re-attached something that is simple with an iid tool or other diagnostic tool as i had to do this a few times with my D3 and it did not need a new one Discovery 3 se gone

Did you hear any noise when you pulled it if not you have not pulled it hard enough it takes a lot to release the brakes as the wire is long and it snakes its way a fair bit around car you really need to pull very hard Discovery 3 se gone
