Exhaust issue?

Hi, slightly louder noise from the car when idling recently - almost sounds like a motorbike in the distance. Getting under the car it definitely sounds like the exhaust is noisier. I just spotted that the mesh basket that I think forms part of the exhaust just next to the back of the engine is split at the top and is very sooty. What is this part please and do you know how much to replace please? Thanks v much!

You can't see the damage but it's this thing on the left of the picture.

Its a flexible joint , they can be replaced by welding in a generic part, but would involve I think a lot of dismantling. Not sure if anyone has done this.

I did it once on a peugeot taxi a few years ago real pit to get it exaclty right so its straight doesnt vibrate etc, also did one acouple of weeks ago on the Series 2 but as I built the whole exhaust 6 odd yrs ago that wasnt quite so fussy, stainless flex with the mesh was 15 quid delivered to my door Thumbs Up
You can also get clamp on ones which may ne of help depending on the pipes shape etc

Just looked on ebay search discovery 3 downpipe, it looks very compact and very awkward for access, so clamp on no good, but weld on a possibility and thats still going to be a swine.
