Alternator issues leading to other problems! |
|
Hi all, could do with some help please.
Charge light came on on the D3(2006 56) last night.
Checked the voltage this morning, 12.2 before start, no change after starting.
Checked the 5a fuse for the alternator, all is good there.
Got a new alternator (Bosch) and fitted.
Re connected the battery, started up, charge light still on, fuse ok.
Took the batt off for a few mins, reconnected, started no charge light one!
Few seconds later, I get Transmission fault, HDC not available...
Anyone else had issues like this?
Thanks in advance
Tom.

Yeah it's pretty typical when the battery is low.
Charge it over night and see how it goes.
Low battery state will throw up all sorts of issues that mysteriously vanish once fully charged and running. Mods:

Thanks for the quick response,
That was my thinking, I’ve just walked away from it for today leaving it on charge. Hopefully if will come back to life fully tomorrow.
The battery should be good, it was new about 2 months ago so a good charge should bring it back up okay.
Just seems odd that these faults come out when the new alternator is fitted, if it was low voltage surely they would of popped up even with the old alternator not charging properly??
Gotta love all this electronic stuff...

Sometimes when alternator fails it shorts the battery to ground, if yours has done that it may have blow a fuse between the battery and the alternator, the fuse is there to stop the wiring loom from melting, you should check that there is a low resistance from the battery positive terminal and the big connection on the alternator, the fuse is normally in the cable near the battery, but I am not sure the Disco 3 has one.

Thanks Gearmuncher,
I had this on a HiLux, took out a fuse link in the fuse box that is only designed to go if the alternator goes short.
Not the case here though, as the new alternator is charging ok at 14.5 volts ish on startup.
Hopefully a good charge and a hard reset will sort things out.

So, after leaving the battery on charge over night I put it the alternator back in after double checking all the connector and battery cable.
Stuck it all back together, reconnected the battery (had the + & - shorted for a while to hard reset) started it up, all was good and looking of then after about a minute I get the transmission fault back again.
Shut it off, locked it, packed some tools away for a min or two to let it sleep, unlocked, started and went for a drive and not seen the fault since.....
I will see if I can borrow a diag and get some codes out just to see what it was moaning about!
