| Holiday to Loch Rannock/Pitlochry |
|
Off on holiday for a week to Lock Rannock/Pitlochry area of Scotland with the wife and kids (almost 3 and 6.5) around the eater break. Driving in the D3 up from south Cotswolds. Never been to the area before. Kids want to drive up to Loch Ness to find Nessie. Just wondered what else people can recommend to do in the area. I know we will have to drive a bit to do some things

I wouldn't bother with Loch Ness. Tell the kids the monster takes a holiday in Loch Rannoch at Easter. It's a lot closer. You could drive along Loch Rannoch to the end of the road at Rannoch Station and take the train to Fort William and back.
The Landmark centre at Carrbridge is a good day out for the kids but a tad expensive. Also, a trip up the mountain railway at Cairngorm is fun. The wife would probably like some time at House of Bruar and there is a nice walk following a mountain stream behind the shop which you could take the kids on. At Pitlochry, you can hire a rowing boat on Loch Faskally.
I could go on and on. It's a great area to holiday at. Hope you get good weather.

Nice weather in Scotland is a bit like looking for the Holy Grail. Go on th assumption it will be raining and you won't go far wrong.
From Pitlochry - Loch Ness would be a 3 hour plus round trip away. Not worth it. Even Urquhart Castle at Drumnadrochit is an arm and a leg to visit.
Perth, 20 mins away is okay for a bit of shopping, likewise Dundee, add another half hour, where there much more to do. Visit the ship Discovery, Tay Bridge, go to St. Andrews, another 20 mins, East Neuk etc.

We stayed in Kinloch Rannock last Easter was a beautiful area for walking and several distillery's and castles within driving distance. Stephen

Plenty to see and do, but depends what you like?
Blair Atholl castle, walk round the grounds, House of Bruar a bit expensive IMO , Aberfeldy, white water rafting, Loch Tay, Pitlochry Dam, etc etc
As said a lot of places within an hours drive give you huge scope to find something for everyone.

Thanks for all the advise. l will try not to put my size 13's in to with the locals. The wife's keen to visit the shop of her favourite distillery just down the road from Pitlochry. Kids enjoy being out side so I'm sure we'll find lots of things to keep us all entertained. Just have to find an excuse to pop to Dundee to see Disco Mikey for some bits.

Its a really nice part of the country. Another place to visit is Killin at the far end of Loch Tay but maybe a bit out of the way. Or get the train from Rannoch to fort William and Mallaig for a day out. See parts of the moor that you can't from the road.
If you go to Dundee the Horn Milk Bar (beside the Caravan/Motorhome sellers) on the A90 has the biggest bacon rolls ever! But if you are on holiday go to Dundee via Pitlochry, Kirkmichael, Blairgowrie and Couper Angus -A924. Very scenic if you are not in a hurry. And if you are not in a hurry on the way up or down then take the tourist road from the A90 north of Dunblane via Crieff to Dunkeld - A822).

Lovely part of the world...recommend Aberfeldy to Kenmore... then along the north of Loch Tay to Fearnan ...turn right to Fortingall where reputedly the worlds oldest Yew tree is in the churchyard ..continue to Cosheville turn right and up and over to Tummel Bridge then right to Loch Rannoch ...keep going to Rannoch station ......other notables Pitlochry, Killin, Creiff you could spend a month finding little gems tbh 21 year LR veteran > D2 GS 2003 > D3 S 2006 > D3 HSE 2009 > D4 HSE 2013 > D4 HSE 2015 > D5 HSE 2018 > DS HSE R-Dynamic P300e 2021

Been here 3 days so far, beautiful scenery, friendly locals and weather has been sunny everyday so far!! Couldn't ask for more. Been up to Avimore and the Cairngorms and up the railway to the top of the mountain. Up to Inverness and Loch Ness. Had a beautiful drive in the D3 down the side of Loch Ness to find neptunes staircase. Been locally to Highland Safari. Unfortunately didn't make it into a defender or one of there 3 new D5 HSE's. (like the front and the interior. Still not sure of the back end) kids enjoyed the Red deer and owls. Only got slightly rained on at the RZSS Highland Wildlife Park today. More exploring tomorrow !
