Black extended roof bars - LR or aftermarket?

Looking around for some black extended roof bars.

Big old spread from aftermarkets (£120) to originals at a discounted price of £360.

Anyone bought any aftermarkets that they would recommend as I bought some aftermarket roof bars and the quality difference is noticeable compared to factory ones I used to have.

Wondering whether to just bite the bullet and pay up for quality...

I went through the same dilema as you and decided to buy after market ones for around £150 from The Bay. They were advertised as D4, but the model numbers are exactly the same. I then had to wait for a secondhand set of bars to come up. Quality wise they seem OK, but there is a slight and I mean slight gap on the extended rail where it meets the roof.

I have since carried loads of heavy items on them with no issues.

I'm more than happy with mine and didn't think the extra cost for genuine was worth it.

I bought after market and the quality was fine. There was a big problem however. Rolling Eyes
The front portion of the bars ( the extended part that screws into the one off hole ) wasn't quite contoured correctly and didn't seat right on the roof once screwed down. I had to remove it, warm up the foot with a heat gun and persuade it downward. It now looks and fits perfectly.
Also, the bolts supplied with the aftermarket rails had washers that were too small and pulled through the holes in the rails. This wasn't a problem for me as I have access to a whole host of bolts, rivets, washers etc. so I soon had the right parts and had the rails installed.

They do however look very good and you'd never know the difference so you can make a huge saving.

In summary then, expect the aftermarket stuff to need tweaking for a perfect fit and don't rely on the installation kit supplied as I found this to be inadequate. Thumbs Up

Pretty much the same as Narpy - the aftermaket rails themselves are fine (and also used mine loads with no issues) but the fitting kit needed a tweak ot two - mine was 2 bolts short of what was needed and as said, washers inadequete)

To the untrained eye you wont know the difference between aftermarket and genuine

I've just taken delivery today of a set of aftermarket extended rails.
Fingers crossed I'm going to attempt to fit them tomorrow dependant on the weather.
Cost was £115 from a seller on the bay..
I will let you know how I get on, and will take a few pictures if it all goes to plan Mr. Green

I managed to dodge the rain and get one of the two roof rails fitted.
firstly I un wrapped all the parts on the dining table and paired everything up..
There was no instructions contained within the box but it all looked quite easy to set up.
First of all,off came the short rail and i gave the channel a good clean before installation.
Set up was easy and all in all the fitting of the first rail took 30 or so minutes...
I will be doing the other tomorrow...
Very happy with the result and quality of the product..

I also purchased aftermarket roof rails for the D3. Only passenger side (short section) holes didn't line up. Cordless drill and small flap wheel sorted it and they now fit perfectly and look good. Don't use cross bars as fitted rails to mount ham radio antennas.

Cheers Pete - they look great and exactly what I want to do!

Don't suppose you could let me know the seller or the exact link so I buy the same ones.

Cheers
