I use it on-road when parking on a gradient so as not to depend on the wee pawl in the autobox.
Off-road I use it every time I stop to get out. No problems so far.
Once using my MY2010 using hill descent control down a mile long mountain track, the EPB errored at the bottom of the hill, seemingly to do with the HDC. After a reset or two the brakes bound for the next few miles but eventually came right again.2016 D4 Landmark SDV6 (Euro6), Zanzibar (late run D4)

I'd be asking myself why the sales man is telling you this info, maybe they already had an issue with this car and the EHB and just don't want you to use it as its not been fixed properly and they don't want the repair bill later,

On auto on a hill, put EPB on, put it on P, and let go of the brake pedal. You will hear and feel the EPB shoes stop it.

I always use my epb too, did do on my D3 all the time as well.
previous LR D3 HSE, RRS HST, RR Evoque Dynamic Lux.
Current D5 HSE Lux
Mine's a manual, so I pretty much have to use it all the time. Every year it starts squeaking and my mpg goes down a bit, so I have it cleaned out by my indy. It screeched once too, so then I took out the fuse and got it cleaned up soon after.
