Auto and use the handbrake at every set of red lights.
It works, I've paid good money to get new shoes, them set up properly so I'm using it.
Sometimes it needs an adjustment but I'm still on my original and 12 year old module....

When my mate had a RRS he would lie awake at night worrying about his EPB sticking on, he eventually stopped using it
I use mine each and every time I stop though.

Mine (NYC) was adjusted the last time I had the rear rotors and pads done. Also had it checked and they were fine. I do exercise them.

Thats fairly conclusive I'll look up how to clean the EPB, although I tend to take it fairly easy in the RRS offroad 2008 TDV8 Sport HSE

I always use the brake when stopped but take it off manually before pulling away. I have the feeling that this is better than using the auto release which must put an element of strain on the system. Is there any truth in my theory?

Must admit I use mine all the time and mine does get used off road quite a bit and I've never had a problem with it or done anything special to it after being off road Cheers Ian

Exactly what I do....use it just like an old skool handbrake...it does feel like it puts strain on it but I might be wrong....
Plus on a hill the car will hold briefly after foot brake is released.... Visitor from fullfatrr.com

Agreed with DrRobH and ClassikFan - I do exactly the same thing for the same reasons - no idea as to the actual benefit but it does feel better than just driving through it.

The brake is released when the accelerator is pressed about 4%(don't remember the exact %) but it takes a fraction of a second to release the shoes, if you press the accelerator to that 4% and pause momentarily before pressing harder there is no more resistance put on the system than releasing by hand, neither is there any jolt felt, just a smooth start.
By flooring the accelerator the engine revs faster than the brake can be released resulting in a bump on start and more wear put on the brakes.It can when others can't,

I had mine set to come automatically after none use rendered it not to standard (found at an MOT)
Since then has worked perfectly & passed its MOTBREXIT - done properly.

BLFarrar - did you change the settings using an IID to get it to come on automatically?
Quite a few years ago now - the indie I use did it with or on thier service "tool"...Fourx4 in Leeds

My local indie has really got the EPB operation down to a fine art now (I showed him DiscoMikey's report) and he says that it is crucial that the operating mechanism must be absolutely free and well lubricated. He also states that I should use the EPB as normal so that it is kept working. Regular servicing and adjustment is crucial. Also, when stopping on a hill, you should apply the EPB and then release the footbrake before selecting 'park' as this will take the strain off the little pawl in the gearbox.
