You answered your own question there Brian, manual D3's are way better than autos for consumption, mine also decreased consumption when it was remapped, you don't need to thrash it so much. You need to compare an auto D3 to D4 to make a fair comparison.Joined the BMWX5 45e group

The difference in real terms of standard D3 auto and manual was approx. 2mpg, not a massive gap.
I believe in the early days of the D4 people were reporting ( maybe wrongly) consistent 34mpg.
But, apart from the disappointing mpg, the car is fantastic both in ease of use now with the 8 speed box and the improved handling, just nee the extra mpg so I can pay for the bloody thing

While you're all having a discussion (and a moan ) about your fuel consumption, here's mine for the last three fuel-ups:
Personally, I think my fuel consumption has worsened since the big belts change/service in January, just trying to work out why/how!!!Front Runner Rack, OEM Ladder & RAI, Tuff-Trek Foxwing, B'rakhah Ingonyama Expedition Trailer, RLD's Spare Wheel Protector, Bodsy's Bars, Empty Pockets! To be fair, you don't, or shouldn't buy these cars because you think they are fuel efficient. They are nearly 3T in weight. The D4 is actually worse than my BMW M5.
Furthermore, with the soon to be horrific tax imposed on Diesel drivers, they'll be worth nothing. I think this is evidenced by the new D5 being offered in petrol form (which hasn't been an option for almost 12 years of Discovery). Yet, no doubt, most will still go for Diesel

D4 Av Fuel Lies?
Just changed my 05 model D3 with 132k miles for a 13 model D4 with 67k miles on it.
First trips indicated 33-35mpg with light foot, then a gentle run 60mph from Holyhead to Chester on A roads of 86 miles indicated a final average of 43.7mpg.
Just how inaccurate are these meters? Cannot possibly be anywhere near this (35mpg max?)
Advice appreciated.---

My MY16 gives around 29 average. Worst I've had is 24 towing a horse box and the best I've seen in 33. Get about 450 miles a tank. I will say though that I've had a 4 wheel alignment done twice in 18 months and topped tyre pressures up 3-4 times too which makes a noticeable difference.

I've been doing a few long(ish) runs to Cardiff from Cobham (310 miles return) and long hauls to Heelands in my MY11 D4 sitting at 60mph on cruise and consistently get 33mpg (actual). The trip gives 35mpg for those and that's with it dialled to minimum over-read. That's about the same as my D3 in similar driving.

Check it against full tank to full tank reading, Ive found most cars knock of 10 percent of what the dash says and you arent to far out.

if you wanted economy you would not choose a 2.7 ton car with a 3 litre engine....are there different speed limits in Scotland (80 mph )

It's a large chunky utility vehicle that can hold a lot.
I often compare the size of this when I'm stood filling it up with derv to the car next to me at the pump could go inside mine !
Consumption
Mid 20's to maybe lower 30's is the number I get regardless of load but not regardless of speed.
Constant 70mph long runs always low 30's.
Around town short stop start mid 20's
Towing large stuff always mid 20's
But I'm not being gentle - brisk driving.
Use supermarket fuel with 2stroke add-in
I often wonder if a "chip" could increase consumption

Re: D4 MPG is Crap

So, just over a month of ownership and I have entered all my fuel receipts into Fuelly and to be honest I am really really disappointed.
I have filled up 10times since I picked it up and the best I have got from a tank is 28.4mpg, the worst so far being 25.2mpg
Now granted, every now and again my right foot has been heavy but only for 10 mins or so to clear traffic and the likes but never go above 80mph so I would not have expected the results I am getting.
There could be an issue with the way I am filling the car however, on the D3 there is no mis-fuelling device so it is really easy to brim the tank and therefore the results are far more accurate, on the D4 I cant do this so wait for second click every time I fill up.
Am I the only one experiencing crap Mpg?
I was getting 26-28 in the D3 with a heavy foot.

I did enjoy the subtle title to this thread!
Mind you, driving 30-35,000 miles a year (likely to increase quite a bit over the coming year) and paying for my own fuel (!), I'd completely agree
But, I'd sooner go on a two week holiday with Nigel Firage than part with it and replace it with an ecobox!
