Abroad with a hot rear wheel
Hi All,
In France at the moment and just noticed that the rear passenger wheel was hot to the touch after a 45min journey - pulled up at the gite and though I could smell brake lining so did a quick check.
Is there anything I can do to try and free the Caliper up without any tools? I’m back in the UK on Saturday but have a long drive from Portsmouth to Newcastle ahead of me - wonder if I can ignore it until I get back home, then get it straight into TVLR??
Cheers
Steve

Do not ignore it, I had a disk glowing red after about 10 miles. You could always call out AA/RAC if you have it, if they can’t free it up they’ll get your car recovered and give you a hire car, subject to having that level of cover.

I checked as soon as I smelt something when getting out of the car, so at least it wasn’t glowing, but the wheel was hot.
Could it be the EPB or more likely the caliper?

Could be either, but all my issues were calipers.

If you have access to some basic tools take the wheel off and try to compress the caliper piston whilst still on the car. The piston could have corroded and the corrosion is stopping it from fully releasing.
This may give you a short reprieve and enable you to get it fixed later on.De-Tango

Blingy grille...
Could be the epb, there is a procedure to wind it off using the foot pedal and the epb lever, from memory it’s 5 pedal presses hold on fifth and push down on epb?

I Had the same issue before Christmas.
Thought it was a sticky calliper however it was the Hand Brake Cable which had swollen inside the shroud.....Give it a pull downwards and it freed off for me till i had it replaced.
Good Luck

I had both today front left was rusted and failed caliper which had slowly gotten worse, rear right stuck brake shoe which was my original complaint. The former was fixed with new caliper, the latter simply with a slight tuning and lubing.
The car was very difficult to drive at speeds exceeding 60 km/h when I took it in as it was like driving on rocks - constant shuddering.

@Beanie - we’re staying near Avranches so rather local - was in Rennes sightseeing yesterday
Planning to head over to Mont st Michel tomorrow, so fortunately not travelling too far (13 mile)
When looking earlier I thought it a bit odd that whilst the wheel was still warm the disk itself was cold?
I’ve also applied/released the EPB several times and it sounds fine but can only go by the sound obviously , though allowing the car to coast in neutral presents no sound of brakes binding.

Whist you siad you could smell brake lining, are you 100% sure its not a wheel bearing based on your later comments about cold disks?
Could it just have been "generic hot car scary smell"?
I guess disks will cool quicker then wheels being thinner etc, but I thought Id mention bearings as when my front one went you could feel the difference in wheel centre temps between the good and bad ones.
Good luck.Disco 3: Lotus Elise S1: Ferguson T20: Audi A2

Back from a trip out and went home via a generic franch car garage. Both the disk and wheel were hot so got it checked out, where they lifted the car and it was hard to turn by hand so wheel came off and caliper sprayed/cleaned then out for a test drive.
It looks to have improved the situation so that I can at least drive it home tomorrow, though the garage said its the EPB and that I should not use it.
I’ll try the EPB disengage routine that Beanie described, which is something I’ve not heard of whilst being a long time forum lurker?
I’ve just got to get it up the road 1hr to the ferry port, then life gets easier once back in Blighty- any Portsmouth garage recommendations should I need it tomorrow?
