V8 problems running in 6th gear at hwy speeds?????? |
|
Does anyone know of the V8's having poor ability to stay in 6th gear (~2000 rpm) on the highway at 60-70 mph without really even pressing much on the throttle? Ours will use 6th when on totally flat ground or under almost no engine load but when you give it just a touch of throttle, it shifts into 5th and even 4th if you actually want to maintain speed up gentle inclines.
Hear of this being a known problem on any other V8 models. Ours is 2007 US spec.
On a side note, I was surprised to find out the old Discovery II had nearly the same torque even though it's HP is considerably lower than the LR3.
Dealer already "fixed" the issue by zapping some computer but it does not seem to be much different, just not as terrible as it was before they zapped it. Maybe it is recurring and not holding the computer "fix".... ?
Ideas please....? 96 Disco I, 210,000 miles - still going strong

Mine does this as well, I just put it down to 6th being extreme overdrive.
Interested to know if this is not true!!
Another thing, had the 'enhancement pack' done a couple of weeks ago, and the Computer MPG figures are significantly lower (and probably more accurate), although the estimated range is about the same. I know they computer was a bit optimistic, was this a fix to the software? Craig

I often have to momentarily lift off the accelerator or 'blip' the cruise on and off to get 6th gear to come up. Once engaged, it does seem happy in 6th and have often wondered why it doesnt just go there. D3 HSE V8...

Well mine has no problem getting to 6th in fact possibly too ready, anything over about 50 ish and its straight in. The wife drives it 95% of the time though and within 10-20 miles with me behind the wheel for some reason it never wants to leave 4th for ages

The only time I've noticed the behavior described is when I'm towing my trailer. Then it is to be expected. In fact I've taken to driving with the trailer in "Sport" mode to get better downshifts and better engine efficiency. 8) '06 LR3 4.4 V8 HSE Heavy Duty package, Satellite Radio, Luxury Package

I have one of the rare V8's here in Oz. In my case the transmission is over-ready to downshift when going up even a gentle hill, particularly when on cruise control. I am now in the habit of just flicking the gear shift to the left, then pushing forward, so it's "locked" into 6th gear. On any meaningful rise, when the speed drops below 90 km/hr (about 55mph) all power is lost and I have to downshift. If doing this, don't forget being locked in a gear when stopping. This causes a takeoff being locked in 1st gear with lots of funny engine noises and a smirk from SHMBO. Can someone shed some light on what the "enhancement pack" is about? I've never heard the term, but if gas mileage is improved, I guess I'd be interested.
Thanks!
