There are now loads of D3 owners who have changed their oil pumps to the later, stronger version. If they had not done so, how many more broken engines would there have been?
LR stating that they are not aware of the problem is absolutely staggering! Evil or Very Mad

What do Jaguar say about the problem?

And maybe more importantly Peugeot/Citroen?

Or is it just Land Rovers that are affected?

As this engine has been in production since 2004 and placed in a variety of vehicles - Peugeot, Citroen, Jaguar and Land Rover. It appears that the 'failed oil pump' engine are of the 2007-2008 area in Land Rover only. So what design of pump was fitted prior to the failed oil pump group. If it was different in the early group of vehicles why an earth did Ford change the design and why have there been no or few failures in non Land Rover vehicles? For those who are unsure of the difference in pumps the pictures below show secondly the weakened pump housing and the first one is the later strengthened version.
Apologies to those who are familiar.

Also - the failure generally does not occur until the timing belts are changed. Oil pumps fitted at engine manufacturer seem Ok (there has been the rare exception) but when the timing belt is changed it is after this action that the pump housing fails.

Fatique in the housing? Overtorquing the bolts for the tensioner? Stronger tensioners? Ham fisted mechanics? Who knows.

There are also Ford vehicles fitted with the TDV6 and they do not have the issue though their engines are fitted with the later stronger oil pump housing at manufacture.

Are the timing belt tensioner bolts coated with threadlock at manufacture (most bolts seem to acquire the stuff when the vehicles are built), if so then the torque required to undo the bolt could be considerably more than the boss was designed for and therefore stress cracks are introduced which later on develop and boss lets go. Still would like to see a picture of the very early oil pump that doesn't appear to suffer from this problem to compare with later versions. Anybody know who makes the oil pump housing for Ford or do they make their own?

I have a genuine Ford (not Landrover) oil pump here and it has the FoMoCo emblem cast into the oil pump housing so I assume it is Ford made.

More worringly, the earlier (05/06) pumps are beginning to have issues too, so it would seem no 2.7 is safe from a broken casing with the older design Shocked

It's a Ford pump that is fitted to the LR and the Citroen/Peugeot/Jaguar 2.7 tdv engines. Your photo is of the later modified pump. (But you already know that, I'm sure Thumbs Up) That's a good clear picture of the modified pump.

No - this is the pump made by Ford to go into Ford 2.7 TDV6 vehicles (Ford Territory) - the LR, Citroen/Peugot/Jaguar pump does not have the FoMoCo casting in it. There also very minor differences in the casting.

Also the genuine Ford oil pump from the Ford dealer is 1/3 the price of the genuine Landrover version from the Landrover Dealer.

The Ford Territory never had the earlier oil pump housing on their engines - hence they are a good cheap source of the TDV6 engine to go into dead Landrovers.

Erm - The Citroen pump supplied for my 2.7 tdv 6 has the FoMoCo stamp in the casting. The 2.7 tdv 6 is the Ford Lion engine as fitted to LR Citroen Peugeot Jaguar etc. as well as your local Territory. It's basically the same engine.
The original 'bad' pump from my LR was originally replaced with a Bearmach unit, but this was discarded as it was prone to an oil leak at the crankshaft seal. Hence the reason in fitting the genuine FoMoCo part.
Here in the UK I believe you'll find that all the LR pumps are FoMoCo.
That's how I find the situation anyway. Thumbs Up

Mine is 07 reg where can I check the VIN number to see if mine needs replacing, been advised today that it does as 07 seem to be the worst years. Full service history at main dealers with belts done @ 97,000 now done 132,000, no mention of new oil pump.
Been reading posts, that there is a Vin check table on here somewhere but can't seem to find it.
