Heated Steering Wheel.......what's going on here then
Hi Guys,
Had a trip to see Disco Mikey today who successfully fixed a couple of things that I'd broken, enabled my FBH and disabled my TPMS - so far so good.
To be clear about the next question, I drive a Nov 2015 Disco 4 Commercial, that I've had from new;
I bought a heated steering from someone on this site to fit to the car, a switch pack and associated wiring harness from Land Rover and put it all together. When I fitted it, I realised I had a spare wire with nowhere for it to go and the wheel failed to work. Everything I have read to date suggests that my car comes with the connection for a heated wheel to be fitted, but when Mikey opened up, the connector wasn't there.
Land Rover only sell one ring now (heated) and when we looked at the part number of the one fitted to my car, it is the same one referenced on this forum as being the one required for a heated wheel to work?
So I have a heated wheel fitted to the car, with a ring that according to the part number should have the connection on it, but clearly doesn't.
The only reasoning that Mikey could come up with was that because it was a commercial, it may have been fitted with older components, but that still doesn't explain the fact that the part number on the wheel suggests it should work.

Hi,
Nope - I have a heated wheel and no heated clock spring (which is clearly the problem). But I have a part number on my existing clock spring that should have the additional plug on it to take the wire from the heated wheel switch and doesn't???
I was told that all 2014 on cars had the heated clock spring as standard fit - clearly not.
When Mikey took the part number off the clock spring in my car, it is the same one people on this forum are quoting as the one required to enable a heated wheel to work.
So my original post was to make it clear to those who may be thinking about this mod and have a post MY14 car that the heated clock spring may NOT be in place to start with.
Mikey did everything asked of him (and more) for a very reasonable cost!!

My 2014 XS was the same. I got the clockspring from Dan at a competitive price.

Update.....
Heated clock spring fitted this afternoon - on/off switch now lights up with headlights, but won't turn orange to indicate its heating the wheel!
I'm totally lost now - any ideas folks?
Thanks

That's what I'm struggling with - Disco Mike enabled it for me last week, so it should have been plug and play.......
Everything is plugged in as it should be, there is power to the switch but no heat.
I'll go back to Mikey and see what he thinks.....Nick

How do you know there is power to the switch?

Hi
Maybe I'm showing my ignorance here, but when the headlights are on, the switch is illuminated.
This has only been the case since the wire from the switch was plugged into the heated clock spring, so I presume it now has power? Checked the fuse in the fuse box and that's fine.
New switch pack, new switch pack wiring, new heated clock spring, wired correctly and enabled???
I'm beginning to think I have a duff wheel Nick

OK, so what follows is based on my experience of putting a heated wheel on my 2010 D4 GS and is intended to help the OP and anyone else who wants to do an upgrade - I got help from people when doing mine so am merely passing on a combination of that help plus what I know in the hope that it helps others.
I have an 'AA' prefix VIN number and it did NOT have a heated clock spring fitted - your car is a higher spec than mine so may have it but if I were you I would take the cowling off the steering column and look to see if the power supply is connected or simply terminates with the plug wrapped in a piece of grey foam and taped up.
To take the cowling off there are a couple of T20 head screws in the underside and you will see the power cable on the left side.
As regards the wheel itself, if you just have a bare wheel it will work with any model year car PROVIDED THAT THE CORRECT MODEL YEAR ECU AND SWITCHES ARE USED.
For a 2010MY car you need an ECU like the top one in this photo - the red plug connects to the clock spring, the black plug connects to the heated wheel switch pack and the heated wheel plugs directly into the ECU at the opposite end to where the other wires come out, you keep the rest of your wheel loom:
The ECU in the bottom of the photo is for a 2013MY car onwards and is NOT for your 2010MY car.
As I have mentioned already, if you have a cruise control switch pack there is no need to replace this, it will still work as you are not replacing any of the existing steering wheel loom.
You will need the correct heated wheel/phone/voice activation switch pack though to go on the right hand side of the wheel. It looks like this - note there is no white painted horn symbol on it:
Don't worry if the colour does not match your existing switch packs as it is easy to take them apart and swap over the heated wheel switch and circuit boards so you can re-use your existing switch pack - i.e. if it is piano black (or Formica ) or if you have chrome tipped switches etc. - the heated wheel switch simply goes where there is a blanking plate on the existing switch pack.
When I did mine I bought a soft leather wheel from a specialist breaker who had a delivery damaged 2016MY car as I like them rather than the correct for year black shiny leather wheels. It came with the corresponding switch packs and ECU and I know from trying to get these to work that they don't in a 2010MY car! (I also bought the heated clock spring and both the indicator and wiper control stalks which are a straight swap )
I then bought a complete 2010MY RRS heated wheel from a breaker on a well known internet auction site and removed the ECU and heated switch pack from that, replaced my existing non-heated switch pack, connected the ECU up and all worked without the need for any enabling - i.e. it was 'plug and play'.
I sold the spare cruise control switch pack from the RRS set up to a member on here and put the 2016MY switch packs and ECU into the RRS heated wheel and sold that as well, using the funds from these to offset the cost of the initial outlay.
If you want more info then drop me a PM, I'm working funny hours at the moment so may take a while to reply to you though.

Thanks for all your help guys -.these things are easy when you know how!
There was indeed an additional wire wrapped in grey foam - found it, plugged it in and hey presto a warm steering wheel Nick
