Glutton for punishment


After noticing that I am getting irregular tyre wear, and occasional faults occurring, I've decided to polybush the old girl,COMPLETELY.
The kits arrived and I'm primed for aches pain and alot of swearing.
If anybody has done the complete job and know any terrible things about please share your pain with me.
I'll take pictures of the whole job bit by bit over a couple of weekends/evenings.

I've got some old control arms in my garage if you want to have a practice first. I can post them to you, you can re-bush them and then you send them back to me, and then I'll let you know what they're like?

Sounds like a plan ?

Kit came partly from island 4x4 in Doncaster and partly from a local forum member Thumbs Up
Made it a fair bit cheaper

Make sure that you use appropriate grease when you assemble them, they will list a grease in the instructions but it is not supplied with the bushes. From memory they usually require graphite grease.

Usually when changing bushes the old bushes are so well rusted in place that you cant just press them out, you have to burn or drill the rubber, hammer out the inner, then cut out the outer sleave. A mapp torch and a reciprocating saw makes this significantly easier. I use one of these and it works well, but Im sure that any of the equivalents would work just as well, or if you have an airline then air saws are very cheap: http://www.screwfix.com/p/dewalt-dcs310d2-...-saw/14319

Holesaws on a very slow speed also very effective at removing the old bush. Pick a size as close to the size othe inside of the outer sleeve as you can if that makes sense. I've found it a very effective way of getting them out. Then use a hacksaw blade to cut through the sleeve. Don't drill too fast though or the rubber melts and clogs the saw.

That is a lot of very physical work that you are taking on there and I sincerely hope that you are pleased with the outcome. I did exactly the same using the orange poly bushes with my previous P38 FFRR and regretted it from the first drive, it spoilt the ride at 30 to 40 mph on typical slightly bumpy local roads, the car became quite jiggly and lumpy instead of silky smooth. It was never quite bad enough to tackle changing it back to standard but enough to make me regret doing it almost every time I drove the car.

I hope your experience is much better and would be very interested to hear your thoughts when you have finished as I have been steadily replacing the worn suspension bushes, on my D3, with standard rubber bushes after my previous bad experience but the longer life of poly bushes still has its attractions.
