Started the HPFP swap yesterday evening, old one is out, new one is in, but then it started rain on me and getting dark so i retreated until this evening haha! I did find that the pump i was taking out had a connector i reckon may not have been fully clipped into place, and the pressure regulator was sitting in a pool pf oil and diesel mix in the v of the engine, neither was probably helping the situation..

HPFP now changed, good and bad news.... It now starts fine, no hesitation to start at all.
However, it still has an intermittent misfire at idle and while accelerating or coasting in gear...
Im starting to suspect injectors again as the issue doesn’t seem to effect acceleration in a way that would indicate fuel starvation from LPFP or HPFP, plus there is , what sounds to me, to be a bit of a diesel knock under hard acceleration, as if there is a bit of misfueling under acceleration.
Can anyone suggest a way to test this theory without having to send the injectors away to be tested? Plugging diagnostics in and reviewing injector pressures at idle seems to be fine, so im at a bit of a loss as to how to test them…

I think I saw on youtube a home grown method for testing injectors.
You remove the leak-off pipes from one side (and plug it, as there is a back feed and it will leak).
Then get 3 identical containers and put one under each injector connected to the leak off point.
Start car, if one container fills up much more quickly than the others, apparently this indicates a suspect injector.
No idea if this will help you

I think it was Wheeler Dealers where Ed China was checking the injectors on a FFRR, maybe even the one they resprayed white.

Well... things have gone from bad to worse... driving it yesterday, same intermittent miss, then all of a sudden, a lot more of a lack of power, 'engine malfunction' on the dash, limp mode, pulled in , swiched off, turned back on, and it drove away again with no limo mode. brought it to the shed, couldnt see anything wronk, brought it for a 'spirited' drive to see did that exaggerate any of the symptoms, pulled back into the shed, and there was a load of white smoke form the engine bay, opened it up and there was a leak from the HP hose going from the rail with the pressure sensor on it, to the P/S rail.
I thought, great! easy fix, ill tighten it up!, so i did, brought it for another spin, definitely better, but still had the miss.. left it sitting at idle for a while, switched it off, switched it back on, and engine fault again, now sounds like its running on 5, wont clear the engine fault when swiched off and on
went and tore it all apart again, spanner checked each of the HP lines, all good, no visible leaks, but still sounds like its on 5 and 'engine malfunction'

Before the codes were cleared:

Immediately after codes were cleared:

So the first two codes, p0087 and 0120f are most likely stored since before i changed the HPFP, so for now im disregarding them, the others seem to point to cylinder 3 injector being goosed!
Anyone any thoughts on this?
cheers, c

would i be correct in thinking the cylinder 4 issues would be related to compensation for cylinder 3 spitting the dummy out?

well, no luck so far.. changed both cylinder 3 & 4 injectors, one by one, with a test drive between, still a small bit of a miss on acceleration, then eventually 'engine malfunction' under heavy acceleration. going to plug it in again this evening and see what comes up this time

Finally some good news!
The disco finally has a clean bill of mechanical health! I eventually tracked the fault to cylinder 3, D/S Rear, where it turned out the injector seat was caked in soot and carbon, a quick clean of the injector seat, new washer, and its running like a swiss watch!
...Hopefully it keeps going for a while now
Cheers lads!
