Discovery 3 cabin fan - mended

Some quick notes:

1. Cabin fan not working, but controls still illuminated. Directional motors still working, pressing the buttons made noise as the motors worked. Diagnostic test (hold recycle and eco while turning on the ignition - if all lights go out at end of test is ok) didn't show anything.

2. Replaced fan motor

a) Remove bonnet release handle.
b) Remove two black screws immediately below the glove box - keep glove box closed. Remove panel below glove box / above passenger feet. Comes out easiest by putting fingers behind join between centre console shiney plastic and carpetted bit. Disconnect plug on footwell light. (When replacing the panel, wiggle the left side in first, else it's very tricky)
c) empty glove box
d) squeeze the glove box hinge arms on each side so it opens all the way down.
e) prize out the white rubbery plastic clip which holds passenger footwell heating duct in place. I destroyed the plug in getting it out - it's kind of hard to get hold of; so have used a cable tie when replacing, which seems just fine.
f) wiggle footwell duct until comes lose and place out of the way.
g) the fan has a single electrical connector on the left - release
h) the fan can be removed with a torx head screwdriver / allen key - three bright silver screws. - it just drops out (so long as you did f) above. Put your head in the passenger footwell and look up with a torch - it is very obvious.

Total time about 45 minutes, but it would be much quick second time around.

Then test the fan with a 12v power source. At least that's what I did and I could have saved the effort by doing it after g) above and still in place. The fan still worked, but I already had the new one on order, so I fitted it anyway. £110 incl VAT from Hunters in Guildford.

I also tested it attached to the car connector. Each time I turned the fan from off to auto, the fan kicked for half a second or so and stopped.

Anyway, popped the new fan in and still no working fan / flow to vents.

Ordered the "resistor" otherwise known as the "fan control unit", £75 incl from Hunters. The reason I call it the resistor is because that's what it was called on their parts diagram. This is screwed with two screws (accessible after step e above) into the duct just right of the fan assembly. It has an electrical connector on it. It is easier to unscrew and wiggle out, then release the connector.

Total time for replacing this - 15 minutes with no rush.

Fan now works.

Level of expertise needed - fairly low.

Learning points - If the fan works on 12v supply, replace the control unit. If it kicks and stops when testing plugged in (as above), it's probably the control unit / resistor.

There are other posts on here with pictures etc., but I hope this will be useful for anyone with the same problem.

ps - amazing how much quieter the cabin is with the new fan.

Excellent write up there chap, my fan is rather noisy and was debating replacing it but was worried I'd have to strip the whole dash. Thumbs Up

rarely the fan I would have thought.

Either that control unit or the relay under the bonnet.

Swap these relays around.

Good point Pete! Yes, the relays are only a few pounds and there is also a 40 AMP green fuse in there. I swapped both for others in the box and still had the issue, but absolutely it is a good starting point.

This is great - had the same problem. Tested relay by switching the starter motor one - that was ok. Swappped out the module and it fixed it! £40 and sorted.

Thanks 👍

8) With the help of this post I got my dad’s heater blowers working properly earlier on today
Everything has been lighting up as normal in the cab but he’s had no air from vents very randomly been hit and miss Mad
Sometimes taking upto 20 minutes to start working after much faffing with switches on/ off etc sometimes days without working then all of a sudden work as normal Embarassed Question
Anyway... I went to F16 with ignition on and as soon as I touched it the blowers kicked in
For now I’ve done the F16 -F10 swap
Replacement relay will be in at Landranger tomorrow 8)

Don’t suppose anyone knows the LR part number for the relay that goes into F16 for the heater blower motor?
Landranger don’t seem to be able to find any info and have supplied us the wrong relay with the first attempt Laughing

If you have a basic disco with no rear fan then just leave it swapped as per picture.

But its a very standard relay ! 30 or 40A
