Disco 3 front propshaft advice
I'm pretty sure that the rearmost joint on my front prop is shot.
Art here seems to be a bit of variety regarding price and brands - are there any to be avoided?
Also do I need to purchase new bolts or can the old be reused?
Cheers

Well I bit the bullet and purchased a new front prop. LRdirect looked to be the cheapest at £142 all in delivered for a Britpart GKN one.
Replacement took a bit longer than expected, the bolts coming undone alright but with a lot of faffing around required to actually wriggle the prop out from between the flanges and out from under the car.
In the end I disconnected the gearbox mount and jacked the front of the transfer box up. This ws enough to slip the prop away from the flanges but not past the gearbox crossmember to get it away from the car.
This I achieved by removing 3 out of the 4 crossmember bolts and dropping the passenger side down to allow clearance to slip the prop out. The bolts were very tight and I also slipped off the exhaust hanger on the passenger side and unbolted the fuel pipe clamp from the top of the crossmember on the drivers side.
Once off, it became obvious that the rear joint was completely shot, most likely due to a tear in the rubber

The grease in the CV was dust

The rust had got into the splines too

The wear was obvious

I'm delighted to find that the fitment of the new prop has not only cured the awful rotational metallic clunk and grinding noise, but also the whine that I had attributed to diff or front wheel bearing, the vibration (that I had also attributed to diff!) and 90% of the drivetrain clunk when lifting off/picking up drive.
I now have an almost quet, smooth Disco. Unfortnately I found a worn rear upper arm bush when jacked up and spinning wheels to track down the original noise, so that's another job on the list!
I know that I have a shot centre bearing on the rear prop and also a fair bit of excess movement in one of the CV's so I'll purchase a rear prop when funds allow.
Happy days! Not such a Disco Newbie now!

Do you think my problem could also be the front prop?
Can they cause metallic knocking, like a metal hammer on the drivetrain?
I have an intermittent metallic knocking sound which is speed related and coming from the centre-front area of my D3. It started 2 days ago and is rapidly getting worse to the point where I think I need to stop driving it.
It's not noticeable at higher speeds or higher loads. I've checked for wheel bearings, driveshaft CV's etc but all seem good. If I jack the front up so both wheels are free to spin, I can make a similar metallic sound by rocking the wheel forward and back but that sound appears to be coming from near the input to the front diff (probably just taking up the backlash?).
Today I changed the front diff oil (I'm at 75k miles). It was like melted dark chocolate and I had a reasonable amount of fine swarf on the drainplug magnet but no big chunks of metal. New oil hasn't improved things.
Any ideas/suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

My noise turned out to be the front prop as you suggested, thanks. It was completely dry, no grease at all at the front. Seals were all fine, so after being re-packed with grease and it's back to normal.
