Hi
A friend of mine was very impressed with my D4 and is giving serious consideration to getting one for his wife (who also loved it when I gave her a lift).
He (like me) knows nothing about cars and would probably be looking to go through a main dealer to get the LR 2-year warranty and the pre-sale check. I'm aware from comments on here that there are good dealers and bad dealers. We are in central Scotland so it's likely to be Taggarts or Pentland in the first instance.
What sort of things should he be checking and asking about? Does anyone have an opinion on either dealer (I've used both, one for wife's Evoque and the other for my D4 - both were fine for us.)?
He will not have the confidence of buying from a site member, even if that would be a better option. Should he look to "employ" an expert to look over the car before he parts with cash?
He's at a very early stage with this just now, but advice appreciated. 2014 - D4 2010 HSE Nara Bronze
2012 - FL2 2009 GS Stornoway Grey
2001 - VW Passat Estate Inky Blue
1999 - Ford Mondeo Light Blue
1998 - Rover 25 Red

clearly going to be happier with a dealer and a warranty...when he gets it he needs and uncle ray for the spare wheel..and don't leave the tow bar on.

I'm pretty confident when buying a car but I'd only consider a D4 away from a main dealer with some original warranty left. They have become increasingly complex and it would be easy to buy one with a decent bill round the corner. I purchased my D3 in 2008 and although it was far less expensive than a recent D4 (£15k), I still got one with 15 months warranty left on it and I checked that the warranty was still valid in terms of the services it had with LR customer services. I'm assuming a recent D4 as of course the main dealers won't retail after a certain age and mileage. Best advice is if anything looks a bit wrong then walk away and look for another. I've also seen used cars at dealers I'd not buy despite the warranty as they didn't look like they'd been loved.

The detachable tow bars are VERY easy to steal, plus the clue is in the name.

Yep, they're easily pinched, and if you leave it on for too long, it can cause a problem when you do want to take it off. The lock can seize, get muck in it and indeed the hitch itself can be problematical to free due to rust ingress. It doesn't rust badly, but two slightly rusty surfaces left together too long can get a little attached to each other.
As for your friend buying a D4, I can only echo the above sentiments. They are a complicated car and the premium you pay for having the peace of mind of an LR warranty is well worth it.

I have used Park's in Ayr on a couple of occasions, they are way cheaper than any dealers through the Glasgow/Edinburgh/Stirling corridors both for buying and servicing Joined the BMWX5 45e group

Is Parks in Ayr an approved LR dealer - will they give the LR 2-year warranty? 2014 - D4 2010 HSE Nara Bronze

I asked the same question when buying my D4 and I got one hell of a check list. It's here:

Buying from a main dealer, especially if it has part of original warranty, will be about as safe as you can get, so personally I wouldn't get an inspection done, everything should be covered apart from tyres, brake pads and discs (for wear) etc Joined the BMWX5 45e group
