Auto Gearbox troubles. Incorrect ratio. Stuck in 6th

Went for a long drive today and had gearbox issues.

1. Car didn’t seam to have any go/drive after travelling along, when I needed to start going up an incline. Manually selected a lower gear and it was fine.

2. Again car didn’t seam to have any drive approaching traffic lights. Tried to select a lower gear but the display was saying 6, even after several comman shifts down (yes I was selecting the right way). It then appeared to wake up and be in 3rd.

3. When coming back a similar lack of drive/go. I provoked it this time by applying more throttle to see if it would manually down shift, but it just went dong, F on dash and selected 3rd? I pulled over read the code and it was Incorrect gear ratio P0730-00 (2F). Cleared the code. I’ve seen this code before in January. (6C)
4. Then again for no real reason I got an F on the dash and stuck in 3rd? Restarted car to clear.
I then drove using command shift until I was back in town. Was fine. I read the transmission temp when driving thru town and it was just below 80°C. Read codes and the code back (6C)

I’ve also been getting a violent downshift on the motorway if it downshifts under power. (kickdown) so I’ve avoiding doing that where possible.

The fluid and filter have been changed in May? 110K on the clock.
I’m going to check the fluid level.

Any idea’s what it could be?

I'm I right in thinking input speed to gearbox is monitored against expected output speed for any given ratio and if there is a discrepancy in what it believes to be correct the this code will arise?

Have you checked the selector linkage pivot?

No. Would that cause those symptoms? WHat am I looking for?

The oil had cooled to 50°C and I checked the level. Oil was coming out the level plug with the engine running.
I think it's a bit low when cool, but obviously I was unable to add any.

I'm not a real expert, but could there be an external fault causing this? Like steering angle sensor that thinks your going around a corner, preventing the gears changing? Or the old chestnut - brake light switch?

good points.

I think the brake light switch fault, stops it changing from 1>2. I'm getting the opposite and I check my brake lights frequently in the reflection where I park, so they seam ok.
