EPB not working - Falut U2002 |
|
Evening all,
So I asked the other week, but was a bit vague. Disco3 is a 2006 HSE, 2.7TDV6.
I've made a bit of progress with investigating it so far, but need some suggestions, and clarifications if anyone can help... car electrics are not my strong point! So here is what I know:
- Handbrake red and amber warning lights are on, with one flashing.
- Mechanic has checked over the arts of the EPB, and all appear to be individually fine.
- Took out the EPB switch and tried a known good one from another vehicle, which didn't solve the issue.
- Fault code reader shows a U2002 "Switch General Electrical Failure"
- looked under N/S rear wheel arch at connector, badly corroded wires, with some previously replaced / spliced in, but unclear as to where the other end of the overlaid "new" wire goes!
So what now... my mechanic is not keen to progress, he's very good, but worried by this! has suggested that replacing the rear wiring loom might be the solution, but is worried this will not resolve the issue, and says its £500 ish for the part...
I've read that it can be the connector block, but that could mean that the new loom will only replace one side of the issue?
I'm at a slight loss as to how to progress, is there a fools guide to this that I can start with? Do I need a whole new rear loom, or is there a part to patch in here?
Lastly, I'm base near Eastbourne, any recommendations for an indy Land Rover specialist to take it to?
Thanks in advance.

Any help?
Is a new loom going to help, or can I buy a bypass kit?

You need to get the problem properly diagnosed before you start buying expensive parts that may not fix the problem.
As good as your mechanic is, he possibly won't have read the fault codes with a Land Rover specific diagnostic tool. He may well have used a generic code reader which won't speak to your car correctly so won't tell you everything you need to know.
Put out a shout on the forum for somebody local to you who could read all the codes and advise you before you start randomly replacing parts. Mods:

U2002 is either a wiring issue between the EPB module and EPB switch, or the switch itself. Most commonly corroded wires in the NSR wheelarch
Due to the amount of previous "repairs" one generally sees in this area, it is quicker and easier to make up a new wiring loom, and run it between the module and switch, isolating any previous attempted repairs
Fitting is a bit of a faff to route it correctly, as the passenger seat has to come out, as do the NS sill trims And rear 1/4 panel. My D3 Build Thread

Thanks guys,
really helpful as always, especial when combined with the information in old threads... I'll try and persuade my mechanic to overlay 4 new wires + 2 new 12v cables for power. Hope that fixes it!

Hi all
My handbrake hasn't worked since I bout the car but I have decide to try and get it to work! I have had it plugged into the land rover computer and it's cum up with fault code u2002?? It says the switch is faulty but I have tried a new switch and it still doesn't work same error message on the dash saying park break fault. There is nothing wrong with the module because the computer turned it on and off so that works fine it just won't work off the switch. Has anyone else got any ideas what it could be thanks.

Good evening, I have owned my 2005 Disco 3 since it was 10 months old, it has only done just 125K.
The parking brake is stuck on, amber & red lights on the dash.
Battery & fuses are all OK
Hawkeye fault code reader says U2002 switch general electric failure.
I have not replaced the handbrake lever yet but am open to ideas.
I have removed the spare wheel to get a better look at the connectors by the EPB module, I have found 2 wires that are green with a yellow trace (I think yellow rather than white?) sticking out of the harness, neither appear to be live but with a continuity tester they have continuity between them, any ideas where they go? should they be joined together? There is also a connector plug in the same harness that has 4 wires in one end, a green, a yellow, a red and a purple or brown with a pink trace I think, there is no wires in the other side of the connector, I have separated the connector and it does not look like any wires have been fitted to the empty side previously.
So I am stuck with the two green and yellow wires/ where do they go?
What are my other options to get the handbrake released?
Any advice greatly appreciated, thank you

Sounds like you need a new switch inside the cab.
Or open it and clean it like a tv remote ?
Regarding the green wires. I think there was a mod or recall. So I wonder if they are left over wires. Or you could be correct that they need sorting

Good morning Pete, thank you for your reply, I have a friend with a similar age vehicle close by that has agreed to let me try their handbrake switch today so I can eliminate that one way or the other.
Any other ideas would be gratefully received as I am at a loss with what to do next, can't even move it to get it to someone else.
Thank you, Steve

A picture of the green wires may help
If the switch solution doesn’t work

I did try to take a picture yesterday but the light was so poor it did not come out, I will try again today after I have tried a different switch.
Can you remember what the recall was about that you mentioned before?

I can't find a service action.
However, 2 thick green/yellow wires should come out the EPB (pins 4), and then join together with a green/yellow going to battery + via fuse big fuse 8 under the bonnet
if you seach for your fault code on here you get results like this: (replaced switch)

Thank you for your reply Pete, I think I can see with a mirror the two green/yellow wires from the EPB plug and now appear to join to another separate wire and disappear down the chassis? This might mean that the mod or recall you refer to might have been carried out and the two green/yellow wires still in the harness are the old original wires now not used? So I'm not too worried with these now
I swapped the handbrake switch earlier and it made no difference unfortunately
I have also now removed the passenger rear wheel to get a better chance to look at the other connector plug behind the plastic shield, I gently moved and inspected each of the wires and the only one which was a bit damaged was a thin blue one that goes into the far corner on the plug, when I went to check if I had made any difference the amber light now goes out and the handbrake can be disengaged and the red light goes out. Hooray! I am not sure what that blue wire does and although I don't think it was actually broken I have now soldered it back together and thankfully at the moment it appears to have solved the problem. I cannot find any other wire going to that plug that is damaged.
Thank you for all of your help and advice, Steve
