Discovery 3 V8 rattling noise when moving (not prop shaft) |
|
Hello dear all,
I can almost solve everything on my disco but that one has been a pain in my ***.
recently I had very few times a clunking noise that would accelerate with the car moving and gaining speed. At first I thought ok it must be the drive train, checked all wheel bearings, CV shaft, prop shaft etc... no play, everything is sturdy AF.
Since 2 days the clunky noise is there all the time, it is very loud, loud like people stare at me in the street lol.
best way for you to understand that noise is a video --> me driving yesterday evening, low pace 1st then second gear, the bus I came across amplified the noise we can clearly hear it.
https://www.youtube.com/shorts/vH2YK6vm3mU
EDIT : I may add that when cruising and that the noise is here, then suddently switching to neutral N the noise stops. Which make me thinking it may be gearbox related but that noise from a gearbox would be insanely loud isn't it ?
Please any help is more than welcome.
Thank you all.

HAHA it's exactly this cow bell sound sadly !
Removed the rear propshaft yesterday as the sound when knocking on it was exactly the same as when driving, installed a spare GKN I had and sound disappeared. what is troubling is that when I disassembled the old propshaft, nothing was dammaged inside, maybe a little bit of play but no way that play would ring a bell like that in the video ... very strange honnestly.

My Jeep XJ sounded similar to that when the transfer case chain was trying to slap its way out of the transfer case as it had stretched over years and use.
Yours though sounds more exterior. I would get it up on ramps and have a good look at all you can see as it actually sounds like something in the drive gear is loose.
Get a good mechanic unlike the muppets that had my car for a day and told me they could find nothing! I crawled under and in half hour saw the transfer case chain peeking out of the case!
