Scotland advise
so been reading through the Scotland posts as we are vast approaching SWMBO annual highlands road trip. Special one this year as well as she will be joining the big 5-0 club (might be time for a trade in and i dont mean the D3 ) So Ive promised her at least 1 nice hotel on our travels. She also wants to get near the very top this time and possibly go over on to one of the islands for a aday so any advice on which would be the best also in terms of taking the D3 across? Seen some lovely castle type hotels etc we ususally stay at least 1 night at "the lovat" at Fort Augustus but was looking at Fonab Castle, Pitlochry
and posibly a hotel at the top of the mainland or even on one of the islands. Just trying change it abit for her birthday as we have done a few of the visitor castles etc etc but will also try and fit in Applecross again as love the mountain road. Anyway any suggestions greatly appreciated.

Or just over the boarder and make a 90 - either left or right will do (unless you are on A1, where turning right will get you very wet...)

For a small luxury hotel to pamper the wife then consider the Isle of Eriska Hotel, just north of Oban.
On a private island (with a bridge) and has pool and spa treatments and facilities, a small golf course and other activities available.
Or as said Kinloch in SKye or the Torridon are both highly regarded.
Skye is probably the easiest island to get to, either by bridge or a ferry from Mallaig or a ferry from Glenelg.
Glenelg ferry is a small community owned enterprise and short sheltered crossing. You often can see seals, otters, sea eagles etc on the crossing. And the road to Glenelg is in some ways a bit like the Applecross road.
If you were to go to the "very top" then the Tongue Hotel, is also very good, or McKays in Wick and Durness.
If you are up that way then a visit to Orkney is easy to do, either taking your car on one of the two vehicle ferries or you can go on a day-trip passenger ferry from John O' Groats. A coach takes you round the islands for the day visiting many of the ancient sites.

cheers people.
was on skye last year and pretty much went round the whole coast road in a day and loved the single track roads on the coast past the lighthouse with the helo station etc we really enjoyed it but didnt stay went back to fort augustus via Eilean donal castle which was a good visit and stayed at the lovat on the edge of loch ness which is nice.
will do abit of research when i get a mo on the other places so we can plan a route but all very much appreciated.

Did you visit the brochs in Glenelg?
We are on the loch just before you go over the hill to Glenelg and thinking of doing upscale B&B this year (we also have 2 apartments on AirBnB).
Not a castle, but a big 257 year old highland house with thick granite walls.

A friend was working at the hotel where Bear and Ben had a bit of R&R when filming on Skye.
