Dash cams and ins
been looking through dash cams and also thought of getting cheaper ins
well was taken back if i'm honest , most ins companies don't offer any discount
which i'm really surprised about
some saying u have to get it fitted my an approved company , which some charge a stupid amount
it seems such a minefield out there
been looking at firstly getting a rear view mirror with a built in digital directional display , i.e. north east west south
think the d2 s had then fitted
don't know what there like to retrofit
then there's other dash cams that have a camera incorporated into the rear view mirror
with so much advancement concerning these , i've been going from web site to web site, yet still none the wiser in what to select
wonder if it's worth to get one that also covers a rear aspect view
cheers guys as always

My Blackvue does front and rear. It's been going strong for a few years now. Can't help you with the mirror though.

Cheap or expensive?
Weve been running one of these in each car for a couple of years and one recently died so replaced for under 20 quid http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Full-HD-1080P-In...SwImRYUUb3
This is the same unit but ours have a stick on screen mount rather than the rubber job supplied with this one
Theres also a downside if you have an accident and they take the camera and you were driving like a dick the day before could they use that against you?
I reckon subtle and hidden is what you need in a camera so only you know its there.

Could always just buy two and fit one to the front and one to the back. Cheap enough.
I fitted a nextbase 512 from halfords at Xmas and it's ok and a doddle to fit.
Insurance companies don't offer discount as they cannot guarantee it will be fitted properly, on, etc and there offers no guaranteed advantage for them.Sill protection - LED internal lights - LED reverse lights - boot liner - Dog Guard - Rock sliders

Everyone is probably saying under their breath - 'there is an easy solution, don't drive like a dick then!'.

Fair point regarding driving like a dick. I think they come in very handy if your unfortunate enough to have an accident where the details are not cut and dried and the other person was at fault. Showing the footage to the police or insurance companies would undoubtedly clear Things up much faster.Jarrod

If you get a discount for a dash cam from your insurer then I presume you are required to hand over the footage to them as part of your contract, however, if you just fit one without any agreement then as I understand it, you can't be compelled to hand over any image by anyone.

Moo, you could easily be donefor 'witholding evidence' if the other side discover you have dash cam footage and are not giving it up or perhaps worse still 'destroying evidence' if you were to wipe the card..

I bet the Police can grab your dash cam at the scene, especially if anyone is injured. In Spain - 2018 F Pace - Down and out's Velar

I've just been informed by a policeman officer friend who has said they can ask for it. He wouldn't comment when I asked could they take it even if you said no. Jarrod

The Sunday Times revealed more than three years ago that insurance companies were offering discounts to drivers who fitted a then innovative device called a dashcam to their cars. Since then the popularity of dashcams has soared to the point where the RAC estimates that 9% of motorists now use one of the gadgets — that amounts to 2.9m camera-equipped cars on the road.
Because the cost of cameras has dropped, discounts in insurance premiums can easily cover their cost. Adrian Flux was the first insurance broker to offer cheaper premiums for dashcam users, and it still knocks 15% off the price of policies if any one of the dozens of cameras it specifies is fitted. Swiftcover gives 10% off.
Insurers say they would expect drivers to send in footage after an accident. If a driver has forgotten to switch the camera on, or if it malfunctions, they will not be penalised, but there will be less evidence that they were not at fault — if that is what they claim.1968 Series 2A

thks for the replies
so it seems the dash cam can indeed be like a double edged sword , ref an accident
was looking up to around £100 quid for one
a fiesta side swiped me some 6 x years ago whilst on a roundabout , he decided to come into my lane and cut across
i lost, because there attitude was i was driving a land rover
my ins company at the time couldn't have cared less and simply paid out
but know with having evidence it can either be in defence of urself or the other side
would also be good for videoing off road trips
assume the dash cam loops , so that when the card is full it clears it unless u tell it to record a section u wish to keep and then starts over again
have heard though cars become more attractive in being broken into that have dashcams
only place i can think of is hiding it up just behind the rear view mirror,
still what ever u fit in the car, can just be pot luck if someone wishes to smash the window etc
maybe better getting one without a lcd screen so it's smaller and more discreet
