Time Climate Cost
Does anyone know how much it costs to run the timed climate for 20mins?
It's been a very mild winter in Cheshire and while it has occasionally been a godsend, I often hear it going when not really required. It sends a shiver down my spine to think that I may be wasting 17p but I'd feel better if it was only 2p.
I assume there is a person out there as value driven as me (a.k.a. cheep) who will have already undertaken an exercise to discover this answer. Can anyone help me sleep better at night!?!

If you set out to waste money by running it for fun before letting it cool right down again on a cold day (without an island valve) then you will have thrown about 20p of diesel away.
In reality the true cost is much lower as effectively you are bringing some of the diesel use forward as it was always going to run the FBH anyway with the engine in an effort to warm the coolant. If you are doing a short journey the offset will be low and if the journey is longer the offset will be higher.
For those with an island valve the maximum price will be lower still as the FBH will drop into low power mode quite quickly, almost halving the diesel used. The offset effect will be reduced by a bit as more heat will have gone to the cabin than the engine, but if you were planning on using the heater anyway (and most would on a cold day) the fuel used is harmonised again, reinstating some of the fuel saving during the timed climate burn.
See, all dead easy!

This can only be caused by two options ?
The first is you have set the timed climate by mistake or it would not be classed as the above not really required.
The second is actually your hearing it when the car is started when the PCM uses it and not when you have set timed climate.
Are you setting the timed climate on the nav screen, or are you hearing it when the engine is running ?

I set the time climate via the onboard computer to come on for 20mins Mon-Fri just before I set off on the school run. It is during this time that I can hear the car blowing from inside the house.
By not required, I am referring to the temperature outside being high enough that I don't consider the car requires heating. In my opinion.
It would be great if it came with the ability to set a Max Outside Temp over which it wouldn't operate.
Still helps to get the water temperature up quicker, cold start of an engine is when the most wear occurs.
If the 20p concerns you, watch the instant fuel usage readout when it's cold.

I thought the auto FBH timer did have an inbuilt max outside temperature over which it will not come on (6 degrees C I thought). That is why the temperature sensor in the car being out by 3 degrees is such an issue (this is a common problem on D4). Perhaps D4Novice has this issue?Gary

The FBI will come on to speed up engine warming, it continues to run after the car is shut down...that's what I assume the additional running to mean.
Cost wise, who cares...it's not much fuel, unlike the car that does 34mpg!Mike
