I am thinking of getting a D3 or D4 commercial.
I need to tow a heavy trailer for work and also carry stock to trade show etc.
It would be purchased via company and fitted with a tacho.
Not mega miles but currently running a Defender so need something with a few more creature comforts!!
I have been worried by the engine failure threads so would run with a warranty.
For this I need to keep the mileage down.
I get the VAT back.
I have found a few options:

After that I get into get into 3.0 litre D4's but I am struggling to find a reasonably priced one with lowish mileage.
What do people think? What represent the best value as a work vehicle?
High mileage D3, low mileage D3, 2.7 litre D4? (any good?), 3.0 litre D4?
Any input or experience appreciated!

D4 with the 3.0ltr is definitely the best driver, but as you've found out, with low miles they are incredibly expensive. Because the VAT can be reclaimed it seems to me the prices are hiked up a bit, not so bad if you are VAT registered, not so good if you're not.
If it was me I would go for the tidiest lowest mileage D3 I could find, or maybe an early D4 with the 6 speed gearbox with a nice mileage. To me a newish D4 is too nice to use in the commercial world and I would constantly worry about trashing it. Where as I would quite happily go about my work in a D3, which I think looks more like a commercial anyway.
Neither will be cheap to run and a D3 could require more TLC because of it's age.
Whichever you choose, you'll think you're in a Rolls Royce compared to a Defender Discovery 4 HSE

Thanks. Makes sense and I agree about the later D4 being too nice to use for work. I think it would feel wrong chucking used tractor parts in the back of one! The other issue is the early D4 commercials seemed to come with the 2.7 engine which begs the question what are you getting over a D3?

So I am still think about a D3 / D4 commercial and found one I like.
It is a D4 with the 2.7 engine.
This initially put me off but actually now think it might be a sensible choice.
D4 commercials with the 3.0 engine are more than I want to pay where as the D4 with 2.7 seem more reasonable.
I have driven a D3 with the 2.7 engine and found it fine for towing duty and general motorway runs so is the 3.0 a luxury I can live without?
What do people think?
