Making Plans for Morocco Trip - Advice required!
Going with my family (wife two girls 11, 10). We're an outdoor loving family that likes a bit of an adventure and we'd like to go to Morocco.
1. October or Christmas holidays?
2. Organised group or well researched/planned trip?
We're not daft and realise the advantages of going in a group (kit/assistance/preplanned itinerary) but we're also aware that socially, children might not be suitable for some groups and not everyone is our cup of tea! Plus, what we want to see/do is not always for everyone else. I might have answered that for myself, but input of your experiences would help us make a decision!
3. Drive there both ways, ferry both ways, or 50-50?
I like driving and my kids are great passengers for ski trips etc, but 3 weeks might be a bit much. However there's so much to see en route and if we spread it out over 3/4 weeks driving 100% could be do-able...
4. Kit. So far we've got a Discovery 3 with a winch, snorkel, bash plate, hitch, roof bars, masses of shackles /rope/snatch lines etc and a bit of experience using them. We have enough camping kit to survive a month away. I'd like to buy another spare wheel, some rescue kit (boards/ground anchor etc) and a compressor/tyre sealant. We are practical people but also realistic and would turn around if things got beyond our capabilities (and would hopefully recognise that situation before it was too late!). So what is the holy grail of kit that you wouldn't be without?
5. Where are the "Must see" places en route and also in Morocco?
6. Anything else?

Hi I used to be based at HMS Rook in Gibraltar. We used to hi-jack the 110 station wagon at weekends and head over to Tangiers.
Must see is Todra Gorge, and head down to Fez which is just on the edge of the Sahara! We used to drive it over a weekend. Be aware it gets very cold over the Atlas mountains especially the time your planning.
It will be fab. We hope to be taking our grandkids over the Pyrenees this year.

Went to marrakech for a long weekend in november and was blown away by the place we were on guided tour so got to go places many tourist wouldnt find easily so id say do your research as its an incredible cultural experience and definitely a place to go too.
i dont want to cast doubts on your trip but young girls will attract a lot of unwanted attention in that part of the world and your patience will be sorely tested i expect, although marrakech itself is quite liberal with lots of casually dressed western women wandering around , out in the sticks tho it may be different .
The old walled town is a sight to behold and the main square at night is unmissable, food, snake charmers the lot its all there MY05 SE D3 Manual my first LR what a car

Regarding offending the locals, we will be suitable covered up. We've spent a bit of time in Oman and Dubai, so get the customs. Thanks for the warning though!

I did a trip back in 2013. I can provide a set of almost complete tracks (Memory Map format) covering two weeks if you're interested? If you're going off the beaten path I would recommend going with at least one other car if possible in case of issues.
D3 SE with Hankook MT 275/65/R18, IID BT Tool, ProSpeed rock/tree sliders + compressor guard, RLD sump guard & winch tray + 13,000lb hidden winch, Gearbox guard, Frontrunner 80l aux tank with fuel gauge, V8 brake upgrade, Traxide USI-160 dual battery system, Frontrunner ladder, custom boot storage, Lazer LED driving lights, de-cat exhaust, Aftermarket Oro TPMS, i7 Mac Mini touch screen install (running Windows 10) mirrored on rear screens.

Where did you get the Memory Map for Morocco from? I didn't realize that Memory Maps covered that area?

I bought it from GoTrekkers. The biggest problem I find is getting a Green Card insurance for the car.LR Discovery 4 XS pulling an Airstream 532 Caravan also own (since new) a 1996 MGF

We are thinking of joining some sort of organised trip out there. Getting to Gibraltar is the 'safe' part of the journey, but I agree that once out there (with a wife and two girls) being part of a group is a good idea!
