I read on another site that there was a bad batch of cranks, and hence they snap in the middle

Possibly. However that wouldn't explain the larger number years affected. Unless crank manufacture is farmed out to a few smaller companies. One of which is making bad cranks. Or not heat treating them correctly.

I have wondered if the crank is breaking as a bearing seizes. This would make sense, but for this to happen, would show the crank strength is marginal anyway.

I'm wondering if the US made Lion suffers from the same problem as the UK assembled version.
 Freelander SE 2005 Auto.
