Towing tin-tent engine system failure - IID diagnostic
Towing our new twin axle caravan back down the M1 last night, cruise-control on at 60 when suddenly got "Engine System Fault" flash up and power dropped off.
Managed to limp to services where a restart cleared the fault and away we went for another 90 miles no bother.
Borrowed a gap IID BT today from a very helpful member and found 2 engine fault codes but they didn't have a date so not sure if they're both from last night:
• P023D-21 (68 ) Manifold absolute pressure - turbocharger/supercharger boost sensor A correlation - General signal failure - signal amplitude<minimum
• P0101-17 (68 ) Mass or volume air flow - circuit range/performance - General electrical failure - circuit voltage above threshold
I've done a search on these codes but just wondered if there was anymore diagnostics i could run with the IId before i give it back? Maybe logging different pressures and actuator positions etc? I'm not very familiar with the IId so instructions for dummies would be appreciated please

Could that last one be one of the MAF sensors?"The quality remains long after the price has been forgotten."Henry Royce

the first thing I did when we pulled up in services was check the top hose but all seemed ok, any other usual suspects for air leaks?

any part of it could potentially leak .check for damage mine got damaged of a sharp stone .check where the hoses go on too .tell tale maybe a little residual oil around the leakYou're not afraid of the dark are you ?

Our D3 does the same with the PO23d-21 code only.
Only seems to happen on the motorway and whilst cruising, but may not happen on some journeys at all. Other times it may happen twice in a 4-500 mile journey.
Checked hoses, all seem fine. Cleaned MAP and MAF with Electrical contact cleaner but it still does it very infrequently.
Always back to normal on switching off and restart.
When i was doing my rebuild, i did notice a very very slight smear of oil at the very bottom of the intercooler fins near one corner but only 2 or 3 cm wide.
I would think that if the intercooler was leaking it would happen all the time, also no black smoke at any stage.
I have tried to provoke it by heavy acceleration whilst moving but never goes into limp mode and no smoke either. Confusing

Hope i am not appearing to hijack this thread, but our symptoms are very similar.
The turbo on my 08MY D3 has the modified actuator linkage and was moving freely even after months of non use during rebuild.

I had the ESF when I towed my caravan for the first time earlier this month. Scared the life out of me at the time but all cleared once I shut down and restarted. I don't want it to happen with the wife and dogs on board and find myself stuck on the hard shoulder but it appears to not be an easy fix. When I towed the next time it was right as rain.

After some great advice from Geoff. Ive done a bit more investigation this morning.
Cant see any oil on intercooler fins so pressume that is sound.
Top bend of usual suspect hose looks ok inside and out (only checked top of pipe)
The bottom connection of top hose doesnt look the best though with quite a bit of oily residue around the spigot and doesnt look as if it's seated enough?

Whats the easiest way to get at the bottom connection to either take the while pipe off to check and or reseat on intercooler?
Every one I looked under when searching for a D3 displayed the oil around lower intercooler hose
I have a note in my service history bills that it was checked and tightened twice
Pretty normal I think
