Alternator replacement without removing fan

Hi all
I had to replace my alternator this weekend and found it impossible to remove the fan. I managed to lock the pulling but couldn't undo the 36mm nut (yes I know it's left hand thread), I actually tried both ways, hitting with a hammer etc.
Anyway, I managed to do it without removing the fan, I removed 4 x 10mm bolts from the back of the fan so it was loose on its shaft and with a few extra pipes removed managed to disconnect the alternator with my hands through the fan blades and remove the alternator from the top.
I hope this helps someone.
