Will 16mm snow chains be OK on a D4?

Afternoon chaps

I'm being allowed out to play in SWMBO's D4 for the next couple of weeks and am heading off to the alps Very Happy

I spent a frustrating couple of hours yesterday trying to get my D3 18" wheels with winter tyres to fit on the D4 having been told by a dealer that they would fit OK, only to find that they don't Rolling Eyes Consequently, I'm having to stick with one of the other sets of wheels/tyres that we have for the D4 - either 255/55x19 or 255/50x20.

I have a set of 16mm snow chains that worked well with the D3 18" combo. On the outside of their container it states that they will also fit our 19 and 20" wheels.

My question is therefore: Has anyone successfully used conventional snow chains on a D4, or do they foul on the wheel arch/brakes? I'd envisage using them in raised/off road height and travelling slowly, but has anyone got any experience of using them in anger?

Thanks in advance

PS I'm aware that LR advise that we should use their branded system which is different to chains, but can't get a set of these before setting off on Monday.

The outside diameter and width of the tyres are the same, its only the wheel size and tyre aspect ratio that changes. Whether is anything different on the D4 that would prevent fitment I am not sure.

Thanks for the reply - the wheels that they previously fitted (255/60x18) also had the same overall diameter and circumference.

Whilst I know they will fit the rear wheels (but are advised not to be used there), what I am seeking advice on is whether or not there is anything different ref brakes suspension and wheel arch linings etc that might cause the chains to foul - particularly on the inside/rear face of the wheels

Some countries insist that you have chains onboard.

You most probably won't need them but have them with you to comply Thumbs Up

Land Rover only recommend ladder type chains such as Spikes Spyder which do not go anywhere near the inside of the tyre. They also recommend fitting to the front wheels only. Personally I wouldn't risk conventional chains on a Discovery with 19 or 20 inch wheels but as others have posted you need to carry a set but probably won't need to use them.

Reminds me of a very snowy day a few years back when my daughter in law arrived in her fathers car instead of her own.

Asked why not her own car she replied:

Dads has a button you press that makes the tyres stickier in these conditions.

I hope my son has since educated her. Rolling with laughter

Normal chain doesn't fit the front wheel, no room enough

Best one are these (KÖNIG/THULE K-SUMMIT XXL K67)
