Halfords Oil

This looks reasonable for the D3.

IN theory, its fine. Correct spec and made by Comma IIRC. However, I'd spend a little extra and get a good brand, such as Shell or Castrol. When it comes to engine oils, id always err on the side of a good quality oil over price Thumbs Up

This review is brilliant Mr. Green

The king of oils03 February 2016

fromBournemouthAge Group: 35 - 44Gender: Male
I have been driving for many years and have done several of my own oil changes, but I was simply blown away by the sheer quality of this oil.
From the moment I picked up the bottle, I knew that others may have their good points, but this one was different. The bottle lay in my hand like a silken purse, giving no doubt as to the quality of the lubricant within.
The description "5W30 fully synthetic" lured me like a siren's song. It may have been 100 per cent artificial, but there was no doubt in my mind that this was the genuine article.
I had my mechanic perform the oil change, and duly presented him with two bottles of Halfords' engine nectar. He seemed sceptical at first, but soon came round after I threatened to fire him.
When the time came for me to pay the bill, he was a changed man. Not broken, but humbled. One might even say transformed. With a tear in his eye he admitted he had been wrong. He rhapodised about the quality of this lube; its golden hue unlike any he had seen in the few years since receiving his City and Guilds in motor mechanics - for he was a young man and his earlier reticence forgivable in light of his youth. He waxed eloquent about the soft "glug-glug" as it oozed into the engine; it had been music to his ears.
I left him promising never to use any other oil. His gratitude was so obvious that I envied him for getting paid for so much enjoyment.
Since the oil change, my car runs as if borne on the wings of angels. Its motor purrs with a contentment seldom found in this day and age.
I sleep easier, knowing that this ambrosial fluid courses through the beating heart of my trusty steed. (So will you, once you've checked the definition of "ambrosial".)
I cannot recommend this oil highly enough. There are not enough stars on the scale.
Thank you, Halfords, thank you, for this perfect blend of petrochemical technology and value for money!

See here
In July 2012, Comma was sold by ExxonMobil to its licensee in South America, Moove Lubrificantes e Especialidades S.A. headquartered in São Paulo, Brazil. With long-range international expansion programmes in place, Moove is vigorously supporting Comma’s ambition to be a leading global aftermarket brand wherever its products are sold.

I can remember this happening as it caused some sort of stir and Iirc Comma kept the blow moulding plant and all the blending went.

I used to work for BP Mobil, I left just as the Exxon merger with Mobil was happening. When I was there the oil was blended and then it (the same oil) got barrelled, under the BP brand, under the Mobil brand and ...under a few other brands Whistle

This is what I use, quite a bit more expensive though

Castrol Magnatec 5W30 A5 Oil 4 Litre

The Castrol Magnatec 5W30 A5 Oil 4 Litre has Intelligent Molecules, which cling to your engine to form an extra layer that protects during warm-up and beyond. The Intelligent Molecules cleverly bond to metal surfaces making engine parts more resistant to wear and gives you super performance under extreme cold start up conditions.

Everybody to their own....
A few quid spent on bargain basement oil/s to me is false economy....
The amount you save may buy a pint.....or a fast food meal
But it will never add up to the cost of sorting an engine that's life is foreshortened.....
An older D3 or even D4 that needs an engine may not be a cost effective fix....
You pay for the work but your vehicle won't be worth anymore if sold or has to be sold

Cheap oil = false economy.

OK - Comma being a brand owned by a major oil producer conjures up the thought......almost the same commodity ?same quantity ? but the actual oil ?
Are we saying it's the same thing oil wise in a different package sold at a cost way below its premium brand brother ?......same thing, different package far lower price......a "yellow pack" like alternative.

I've run vehicles way beyond the usual vehicle life....I mean well over 20 years & over 350k miles....through some hard times where a full dealer services was way beyond my means......never did I compromise on engine oil......never.
Oil changed at the right intervals with quality oil (usually Duckhams.....from the 70's part of BP)... The nines on two cars lived on in other vehicle bodies.....quiet with no nasty noises, no huge oil consumption & textbook compressions.

You make your choice at the check out.....the consequences of (a false) economy loom up later....blue smoke, lots of top up oil, refused performance & an engine that can't be fixed economically.
As a mechanical engineer I was taught (formally) about lubrication, oils, bearings of all types (including hand scraping "Babbitt" or white metal, brass & phosphor bronze....
it always centred around having the right oil & that never meant bargain basement stuff....what gets worn off by no oil, not changed out as it should be oil changed intervals or using wrong or low cost / poor quality oils.
The point I make is if you went to a dealer service & they put low cost debatable quality oils in you'd quite rightly complain......why is it different doing this yourself ?

200,000 miles down and have used a mix of brands, but all to the correct spec. However, I now just buy servicing kits from AF which just makes life so much easier. Interestingly, I've never had to top up oil between services since the day I bought her nearly 12 years ago, although I do check her regularly. Thumbs Up

As long as it meets the spec it'll be fine.

Mix of opinions fair enough, but im happy with the choice today
Spec of oil is right and meets required standards, and only 'cheap' as its in the sale
I dont skimp on the filters, always using genuine
Oil / filters changed every 6000 miles so probably better than most owners only doing it at 12-15k on the likes of Castrol?
If it goes pop.....warranty wise will likely pick up the tab as its fully maintained by registered garage, i just over service to give it a fair crack at reliability

It's the right oil grade, made by reputable manufacturers , just happens to be in "own brand" packaging , anyone would think Halfords don't have an alterior motive for promoting it cheap Rolling Eyes

Lost leader, very common in retail Whistle
