Hi There.
Recently had a new alternator fitted by main dealer to my D3.
Drove car home and I noticed that the battery volts was showing 15.5V on a digital meter that I fitted as part of adding second leisure battery and power outlets to rear of the car.
When I got home I ran the engine and checked the charging voltage at the main battery terminals and this was 15.3 - 15.5V.
I thought anything over 15V was a bit questionable with a brand new alternator, so I called Land Rover Assistance to check as I was worried that this high voltage may damage other electrical items on the car. The LRA chap said that he thought it was too high, checked charge rate to battery, and on restarting the engine it was 40A. His advice was take the car back to dealer and ask them to check/replace it.
The main dealer, diagnosed that the issue was as a result of my second battery being faulty. I have checked second battery and it seems to be OK, holds a charge and reads 12.7V under load.
I am a little bemused as to what to do next.
The main battery is a Yuasa and is perfect. The secondary battery is a Varta Professional Leisure. The switch over solenoid is a T Max and this works perfectly and the in car led voltmeter indicates battery is charging at the highest rate.

Fully disconnect the second battery and any 'extras' on the main battery, then see what the charge rate and voltage is. That will prove or disprove what the garage have said.

Thanks Jmack.
Will try this for a while. Although I don't understand why the alternator would increase voltage above an unsafe level?
Any adverse load would cause voltage to drop and current to rise as per Ohm's Law.
I=V/R
Dealer has already admitted that they don't have a test bed available or even access to one, to test alternators properly.
Any other thoughts?

was it a new alternator or a recon one as even the genuine landrover recon units are crap and often overcharge
