Atrs, snow and chains
The time has come to take the d3 to the alps. She's got 4 new pirelli atr 255/60 r18s on. What's the popular opinion on whether i need chains and if so will bog standard ones do or do i need to invest in some specialized ones?

I'm heading that way in a week or so too.
I've driven before (although this is my first time in a D4, previously in Feb in a 2006 RRS on winter tyres and before that in an Audi Cabriolet Quattro on winter tyres - but that was in April).
I have experienced the Gendarmes stopping all vehicles in bad weather and making them put chains on or checking that they were AWD/4WD had Winter Tyres (the ones with the mountain and snowflakes symbol on). In the RRS I had to point that out to them and they let me pass.
I'm taking LR snowchains but to be honest if I need those then we're all in trouble on the roads and the stuck car in front will prevent me from getting where I want to go, not the snow.
If you aren't sporting winter tyres I think I'd have chains at least with you.

It does rather depend on where you are going, whether you have to go off the main roads and how much you will use the car while there. If you are going anywhere that will require smaller roads, then winter tyres are the only way to go. Don't try descending icy hills without them! With winter tyres you won't need chains.
If you really think you can manage without winter tyres, then best take some chains as back-up as per Oxford boy. They should be spikes spyders or equivalent so do not go behind the wheel.d4 HSE

I was surprised to see that Scorpion Zero's have the 3 Peak snowflake symbol. Do the ATR's not have this?

My Scorpion Zeros don't have the 3 peak snowflake symbol.

Oh. Weird. Maybe on certain sizes? The ones I've seen were on a D4. 19 or 20". As I say, I WAS surprised.

Mine are 255/50/20 and looking on the Pirelli website they say the Scorpion Zeros are a summer tyre.
Currently I'm running Goodyear Ultragrip 255/55/19's on a second set of wheels and didn't need chains when coming back from Austria after New Year with the road covered in 2 inches of hard packed snow. I did however have a set of Spykes Spider Chains in case I needed them.

Just looked on the Pirelli site. The D4 I saw must have had the Zero Asimmetrico's. All season Zero's.

ATRs don't have the 3PMSF mark06 D3 SE / 15 LR D90 XS SW / 88 LR 90 Td5 / 68 BMW 2000 ti

I'm heading up to Sweden and Norway at the end of March.

I have a new set of ATRs on my V8 here in the US and we've had a bit of snow. I had read claims on the forum about people stating that ATRs were great in the snow. Well maybe if those people had no experience of proper winter tyres on a Disco they may think that, but having had conti winter contacts on my D4s back at home I miss them like mad. In deep snow or slush on the highway, ATRs are not good. The car slips a lot on the road. My GTI with a set of brand new winter tires was vastly more stable. If I were going to CH in the D3 or 4 I wouldn't hesitate to get some proper winter tyres. Good as they are, ATRs won't cut it for you in decent snowy conditions.PAGODA

No problems but proper winter tyres would be even better especially under braking.
I'd take chains whether on ATR's, Zeros or Nokian SUV3's.
