remap pros and cons..
not having had the d3 long and everyone iv spoken to has advised me against remapping (aparently can cause crank failure??) this also came from a landrover specialist, and not just your pub banter... is there much truth in the matter as id love to get some more horse power and especially torque and mpgs from the old girl.. im used to having my imprezas on the rollers more than often, would the d3 have to be taken to a set aswell or is it done differently?? road map maybe??
so questions are: what is current figures and what can they safely be increased to....peoples personal experiences please.. torque/bhp/ mpgs
any truth in the crank stories..
and who and what software locally to sussex would people advise me to use??
thanks for your help munk

No truth in crank failures because of a remap, definitely if its done right.

Had mine remapped from end of 1st year, no problems. Much, much more drivable. Crank hasn't failed. Yet.

I get the imprezion you would be better off with a V8 it's your right foot that is the main factor in MPG not a remap. It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

Remap isn't about power or speed, they don't call me captain slow for nothing. It's about smoothness, torque and drivability. No more dead spots.
Could not carless about MPG the remap just makes the car more drivable. I had a Bell one done The happiest of people don't necessarily have the best of everything;
They just make the best of everything they have.

Pros
More driveable car
Easier manoeuvring if you need the power, it's there
Better mpg if you drive the same way you did before (assuming it's not foot to the floor all the time!)
Cons
Face ache from the extra wide permagrin
Coming from souped up world in your area, you may know a guy called Steko? He's done the same move and is more than happy with the BAS remap I've put on his D3 (amongst lots of other things!).
If there are crank failures, it's very unlikely to be as a result of a good remap as the block can take more power. Some D4 seem to have more crank failure than D3.Bodsys Brake Bible

Anyway, point is, there are loads of ex scooby type owners who have moved to D3 and Have not regretted it. Bodsys Brake Bible

I run my D3 carefully for 1000 miles from new (2006) then had a Turbochip re-map. Back then the forum had a link of sorts with Turbochip, IIRC.
I ran it for 150,000 miles with no issues whatsoever relating to it. AFAIK, it's still going strong with it's second owner.
I used Shell diesel and had it serviced on the button.2006 D3 HSE (Original & still the best)-GONE

Unlike Turbochip that (I think) went belly up. Only issue with that is when you need something like a new turbo and they wipe your remap. Had that twice on my car, both for replacement turbos. No longer an option as my supplier isn't around any more.

Remap methods and understanding have come a looooong way since the turbochip remaps.
I remapped a customers D3 who had a turbochip remap on his car for probably as long or longer than DSL.
It was always quite smokey and with no cat and very little silencing, it sounds very meaty.
However, I put a BAS remap on it and the power working with the autobox has transformed how smooth it drives with controlled power on tap instead of all or nothing of the previous remap. Still of course with great power for towing and the occasional bit of 'hooning' smoking almost disappeared.Bodsys Brake Bible

Yeah, I took it back to be re-mapped once or twice to the HQ, which from memory wasn't called Turbochip, somewhere near Reading I think.
The actual "map" was made by the diagnostic folks at this place. I haven't got time to search for it now. I wonder if they disappeared as well?
I'd go to BAS now, not that I need a remap on the EU6 engine, it flys as it is. 2006 D3 HSE (Original & still the best)-GONE

Not going to get the D4 3.0 lump remapped, it's fine as is.
