swing out wheel carrier, and a fridge.....

So I have the need to create more space in the back of my D4 when travelling, to fit in another dog. Am considering moving the fridge out of there, but if it goes on the roof it's a weight high up, and very inconvenient.

Would it be feasible/sensible to adapt a swing out wheel carrier with a large plate underneath, and then mount the fridge to that? Weight held by the swing out mountings, so that ok. Somewhat protected from the elements, but can put it in a cover, so that ok. Maybe a bit warm in the sun when stopped, but probably under rear awning if for any amount of time so that probably ok. Easy to access when stopped, too. No real issues in rear collision, I don't think.

But if it's such a great idea, why haven't I seen it anywhere else?!!

thoughts/experiences welcomed. Thumbs Up

Do you use all 3 middle seats, I fold and drop the centre and put the fridge between the kids ?

thought of that.

But there is myself, SWMBO, and 3 kids..... And sometimes, mother-in-law..... Plus our two dogs, sometimes hers, and now an Irish Wolfhound - currently puppy (arriving 2 weeks) but soon to be the size of a small horse.....

Trailer is another option, but am looking for more flexible options (and faster cruising when in the UK).....

not much less secure than on top, tbh. Bolted on, in cover, will look much like a rear box to most.

Don't Thule do some kind of box that goes on the tow bar. Might be able to adapt that.

An alternative to the Thule and a bit cheaper.

ok, so some other mounting options; thanks folks.

But the swing out carrier is easier for accessing the boot when fridge full.....

still not sure why I've not seen it out there before; either it's a brilliant idea, or I'm missing something Rolling with laughter

interestingly, the 110 has about the same space in the rear as the disco, though am fitting a centre seat so the 6th person doesn't use up the load space so much. But with a wolfhound (and 2 other dogs), I need all the space I can get......
