Landrover service exchange alternator

Anyone had problems with one of these? Specifically overcharging for a few
Minutes after startup, enough to set dtc's and reset the sat nav etc.

To add some more detail to that; I had a relatively normal alternator failure, rectifier went short circuit putting the charge light on and then flattening the battery and smelling/smoking a bit. I got a Landrover exchange alternator (not from Landrover, but in a Landrover box and has all the proper labels on it as a genuine service exchange part) I now have an overcharging problem which only lasts for a few minutes in the morning, not ridiculously high but enough to throw park brake and transfer case errors.

I had this with a non LR alternator from euro car parts and ended up getting it changed. I got parking brake, special programmes and transfer case errors and my sat nav screen wouldn't work.

A replacement denso unit solved this issue straight away.

Thanks James, was it just on initial running after an overnight parkup? When you say a Denso unit, was that from Denso themselves?

No it did it all the time. I only tried it for about a day before removing it and taking it back. Thinking back to it, it wasnt a new denso unit it was another remanufactured unit off ebay from thealternatorman. It worked perfectly until I sold it a few years later.

Others also reported faults with the ecp alternators at the same time.

Thanks James, Geoff,

do we think there is a difference between the LR exchange unit and a 'new' Denso unit from Advanced Factors?

Couldn't say to be honest.

I don't think you can go wrong with AF, as Geoff suggests. Thumbs Up

Cheers Slobbox, I'm going to order one from AF and just get it delivered. I've just parked the thing up ever so slightly exasperatedly. I'm going to be moving house (again) soon and the D3 is a critical tool for that job lol.

I just hope hope hope that it fixes it!! From what I can piece together, the PCM can and will request higher voltages from the alternator during warm up and other periods of peak demand but the alternator is supposed to control the upper voltage limit.

I also managed to get a refund on the Landrover Service Exchange unit that I got from the Landrover Centre in Speke. No quibbling or messing about, just a straightforward refund so worth mentioning their good service too.
