Handbrake - loss of comunication

Evening all,
Any ideas on this would be appreciated, as I have no idea!
2006 D3 HSE, with 98K miles on the clock. Only owned for 6 months or so.
Issue is that on a freezing morning at 5am I went to back of the drive and the handbrake appears to have had some form of an issue. The red and amber warning lights are both came on and are flashing.
Car drives fine, but I can't now reapply the handbrake.
I took it to my mechanic (who regularly deals with D3's) and he wiped the fault codes, which claimed that the computer had lost contact with the switch? Then the handbrake could be reapplied, but the flashing lights reappeared as soon as he went to release it.
The next step we think is to replace the switch... any other ideas?
Thanks
Ru
