Discovery 4 Cold Starting Problems
My 6 month old D4 Graphite has cold starting problems.
When the temperature is below 0, it fires up then immediately dies.
If revved heavily on starting, it coughs & splutters, the revs are all over the place. After 30-60 seconds, it will settle down and then be fine.
No problem when above 0.
Battery good, but suspected poor charging circuit as LRAssistance AA man read a net loss when at tickover.
LRAssistance Tech no.2 said this was to be expected with all the heating elements on?
Dealer found gateway module was livening up when it should be shutdown, so "cured" the battery problem, but since the engine fires up every time, I'm certain its not the battery.
Here is this morning's start attempts:
1) no throttle, engine fired then cut out.
Turned off (stupid) automatic heated screens.
2) steady 3/4 throttle (aiming for around 4000 rpm) - it is not me altering the revs.
Any ideas?Barney

Bad engine sensor data. Seeing that many revs so soon after a cold start sends shivers down my spine.Land Rover - Turning Drivers into Mechanics Since 1948

Note to oneself, don't buy BarneyRubbles Disco when he decides to swap it if he revs it like that when cold It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

Maybe that's why Gary didn't want my old one. Barney

Ok the saga continues...
Dealer arranged for LRAssistance man no.3 to visit to see if there were any fault codes and sort out a loan car as they had run out of courtesy cars.
This despite being assured (when they returned the car to me) that if the problem hadn't been fixed they would sort it out immediately.
LRAssistance man found no fault codes, and said no chance of a car.
He thought the glowplugs should light-up on ignition only, if they should, they definitely don't on this car.
Dealer rings back: we have a loan car which is being repaired, should be available by the end of the week!
So this morning, I attempted to start and stop the car (before it fired up) in an attempt to pre-heat the glowplugs - didn't make any difference. When I eventually started it, the glow-plugs lit up for less than 1/2 a second. Engine fired-up, stalled.
Tried again, same. Tried again with low revs (2000rpm) stalled.
Tried again, with slightly more revs and after 30 seconds the engine was stable.
Turned on the heated seat - stalled.
Any suggestions (other than don't rev the engine so hard)?Barney

Kick it up to LRCS & start liberally using the "r" word.

Tell dealer to fix it properly. Don't accept anything less or "that's normal sir"
it should start on the button, no need to touch the accelerator

...that's terrible Customer Service. If you are on Twitter get tweeting about the problem and the poor service. IMHO a lot of attention is paid to Twitter by the CS departments.
Name the dealer on here too. No comment just name them for us all to read..
The fact you've made a video of the issue is really something.
Come on LR why is this so difficult?

Whose the dealer? They should be able to liaise with LRCS to sort this. The item you have purchased is clearly not fit for purpose. <-- Sales of goods act
Its strange as ive found the LRA are normally happy to arrange for the vehicle to head to the dealer and arrange a vehicle for you. I definitely wouldn't be comfortable revving it to that extremes from cold.MY2023 Discovery 5 R-Dynamic 3.0

Update:
Car been with them for 3 weeks with no contact from the dealer.
Another snotty email prompted a phone call this morning.
Dealer thinks it may be a faulty crankshaft sensor.
Does this sound plausible?
From my research here, it looks like it could explain the rev drop aspect of my problems, and I guess it could be a loose connection brought on by cold temperatures.
Any thoughts?Barney

I wish you could bring it here as I don't think this would take too long to pin down. I've no idea why they are looking for fault codes as the PCM is not seeing any faults, it's just chasing bad sensor data around and doing its best to keep going in all the confusion.
I sometimes think the art of diagnosis has been lost - not everything will produce a gift-wrapped fault code.Land Rover - Turning Drivers into Mechanics Since 1948
