Tips and suggestions for Italy driving holiday

Good evening all,

SWMBO and I are planning a short get away at the beginning of April. We would like to drive the Amalfi coast and other areas in Southern Italy.

We will most probably be flying in to Naples (good, cheap flights) and hiring a car from there. Would love to drive over but unfortunately due to work commitments we only have 8 days Big Cry

We have been to Rome before so are not too bothered about visiting again but will probably be going to Pompeii. We also like the sound of Sorento and Ravello. We like the small local towns with nice boutique hotels and great local food and wine.

So has anyone else done anything similar/ have any routes they suggest? Any advice on driving the coast road? I hear it can be scary at times.

Or completely on the flip side is the possibility of heading to Lake Grada?

Thanks in advance,

Simon

The drive North from Naples to Sperlonga on the SS7 along the coast is quite interesting. It's only about 85 miles, but really quite slow even if you don't stop!

You could spend a day en route at Pozzuoli where there are ancient ruins:-

from there you could also catch a ferry to spend a night in Ischia.

Further North on the coast road Formia &/or Gaeta are worth a visit, as is Itri (Alta) in the mountains.

In Sperlonga itself the interest is in the old town on the cliffs, not the new town on the beach, but you might visit Tiberius's Grotto.

DO check all the above from modern websites; my information comes from my Father living in the area up until 25 years ago!
