Hi,
I've got a D3 auto and was looking at an on-line copy of the owners manual for towing it states that:
"GEAR CHANGING
To avoid overheating the gearbox, and the clutch in manual gearbox vehicles, it is not advisable to tow heavy trailer loads at speeds of less than 32 km/h (21 mph) using the main gearbox in high range. Select low range instead"
I was out in the car today towing and was looking at the printed manual in the car for something else and noticed that this paragraph doesn't exist in the printed version. It had a little statement on manuals but nothing mentioning autos and the low range setting.
I typically tow ~3t+ and when I get to where I'm going it's speed restricted so you do end up driving at about 15-20Mph (paved roads). Any thoughts ? Does anyone use low range when towing at low speeds ?
thanks,
adrian.

Yes I always use low box as you have more control and always led to believe it places less strain on it.

If im in the field towing ill use Low as it stops me getting in a pickle. For road I always use high range even in long traffic jams or slow traffic. Never new this aspect though. MY06 S - Gone but not forgotten

The TCC locks up at a lower road speed in low range than that of high range, and prevents excessive slippage (and subsequent wear+tear) within the TC, as well as keeping the ATF temperatures lower My D3 Build Thread

+1 for low range in a field
Mine is a manual so definitely +1 low range reversing with a trailer
I know a person who even uses low range to get moving on a road with a very heavy load and then on the move switches to high range.
