Rear light goes out when braking |
|
Drivers side rear light goes out when breaking. It's the bulb with the twin filament. Tail light lights up but when breaking goes out and break light does not work. Is it just a case of replacing the bulb and will Halfords stock them.
Cheers

If one side goes out when the brake lights come on it is usually an earth fault with the light unit.
I would trace all the earths back first and check the earth points are tight.
I think the rear light units earth in behind the rear panels in the boot. D4 2016 Landmark, Waitomo Grey.
D3 2005 HSE, Bonatti Grey, now sold but still comes back for servicing.
Defender 2002 Td5 Commercial, had a hard life but slowly being restored.

Also worth taking the bulb out, cleaning the contacts and a squirt of contact cleaner down the socket can help

You clearly have a stop and tail bulb with a blown stop element. I think the tail light is supposed to go out under braking ( or "breaking" as you seem to incorrectly prefer ).
As has been written many, many times on the forum, the bulb immediately next to the brake light bulb ( not the indicator bulb ) is also a stop and tail type, but only the tail element is used by the car. You can therefore swap the two bulbs over and normal service will be resumed.
If you click the Twin Brake Lights link in my signature there's pictures etc., it may help.
Stop and Tail bulbs are available from any auto factors including Halfords but it is wise to buy the best quality ones you can find to prevent upsetting the D3's electrics. Mods:

If the lights are on, the tail lights are on all the time, when the brake is applied the 'stop' light filament lights up brighter 21W 8) The bulbs are the same and can be swapped no probs

Genuinely don't know if that's right Biffy but if it is, like a man in an orthopaedic shoe, I'll stand corrected. Mods:
