Just fitted new battery as old one let me down after 2 and a half years was 3 year warranty so got it exchanged.
the battery was only holding a bit of charge and would rapidly discharge on cranking was still starting the car but past its best.
the new one is cranking it much faster.
However ive read issues with alternators failing, its had a new one on prior to my ownership so not original (2005) car. The alternator looked brand new when i bought it so i would estimate the alternator is around 3 years old.
from what ive seen on here they tend to go and car is just dead, when it let me down it nearly started just not quite enough puff in battery to make it fire up
No other wierd elec faults or smells but i would like to test the alternator to be sure it is functioning correctly, im aware of what voltages it should be producing if normal but what does it read when its failed, much higher voltages like 18v which slowly damages the battery?

In a word you cant, its controlled by main ecu, you can get a test on output volts via a dvm or alternator tester, but other than that its your lot.
