Am I Right ?
I've been noticing a few Disco 4 looking cars about that seem to be Disco 3.5's,
They look like a Disco 4 but they have red rear LED lights, Side indecator in the doors, coloured coded front and rear bumpers of a 4 along with the side moldings, and the head lights of a 4,
But when you see a newer Disco 4 they have black rear LED lights and side indecators in the mirror housing,
So what there a 3.5 or was it 4 and then 4.5 ?
Ok i will get my coat!

It was 4 then 4.5
The black rear lights, indicators in the mirrors and new grille plus front bumper started in MY14 I think?

And there was a "3.5" as well; your discriptions are pretty accurate.
To make it a little more confusing, quite a few people then fit parts from later cars to earlier ones (or, in my case, bits from earlier cars to a late one! ) which can really make things confusing...

You can make a D3 look like a MY16 D4 if you want. All the parts are interchangeable.
My old bus is looks like a MY12 D4 but is an 05 D3. I think this is what is refered to as a D3.5.

Until I decide what to replace my old bus with, i'm thinking of putting the black arches back on and fitting a black grill. I quite like that look.New Defender L663 110 SE (known as Noddy!)

Except my 2013 D4 Commercial was bought with all the black plastic trim replaced by colour coded trim (so black plastic trim does not always indicate a Commercial) "Track day running - Don't put your foot back on the accelerator until your absolutely sure you don't have to take it off again"

05MY to 08MY D3 had black arches as standard (colour coded available as accessory)
09MY D3 had D4 type colour coded arches with black tips
10MY-13MY D4 had red bordered rear lamps
14MY-16MY D4 had black bordered rear lamps
D4 base model Commercials (maybe all Commercials) had black arches.
All the parts are interchangeable though 06 D3 SE / 15 LR D90 XS SW / 88 LR 90 Td5 / 68 BMW 2000 ti

I think the indicator repeater light in the mirror came in at 15my? Along with DISCOVERY on the bonnet instead of LAND ROVER.

You either need to change the front wings for D4 ones or a bit of cutting/fabrication work needs to be done to your original wings to get the headlamps to fit.

It's not too difficult to repair the latter error; until Land Rover issue the official rectification notice, the correct "LAND ROVER" lettering is available on eBay for only around £10 (just to confuse things a little more for version spotters!)
To confuse matter further, this problem didn't affect models exported to the USA.
We actually made a game of it during our last trip to Scotland.
Whenever we say a D4, we tried to guess and find out what MY or version (Landmark, Graphite ..) it could be .. black or rear lights, discovery on the bonnet, repeater lights ..
The links on the highway were never boring but we actually never figured out the logic behind
So we then decided to buy one D4
Disco4.com sticker
D3 11y, 425k km - sold, miss it though (MAR, DNK, NOR, SWE, SCO, WAL, MUD ...)
