Sudden loss of power on start up.

Hi, my M.Y. 03 Disco 3 drove as normal on Sat morn. Started it to go home 3 hrs later and it would barely move. No throttle response and no power. Hooked up my Faultmate and fault P0191 fuel rail pressure sensor range/ performance showed up. Fitted another sensor and all back to standard. This now the 3rd failure in the last year. What might cause this? My
D3 has 218,000 kms but is serviced regularly.

Hi,
which sensor did you replace?
We have the same problem, but since we are driving in Nepal with that dirty diesel we still hope it's a clogged diesel filter...

What pressure do you read when enging is running idle?

Hi , It's the sensor in the centre at the back near the h.p.pump. The fuel rail has the six injector feeder pipes and the sensor is at the rear of this long sausage cast iron rail. As of now I have had no reasonable explanation for these failures. I have also just had a late Defender 2.2 Puma sensor fail. It is also a carefully maintained vehicle. Our fuel in R.S.A. is either 50 or 500 ppm sulphur and there doesn't appear to be any cause as we have had the fuel analysed.

P.S. fuel rail pressure at idle is generally a little over 2220 kpa.

thanks for the info.
Regarding the fuel rail pressure, are the stated 2220 kPa with the engine off?

My IID Tool told me:
ignition on/engine off: 6000 kPa (60bar)
engine running idle: 30000 kPa (300bar), with more rpm it's going up

I don't understand the measured pressure when the engine is off as then the HP pump is not turning, so why should there be a pressure. (I guess that is either an Offset of the sensor or my sensor is damaged)

The pressure when engine is on of 300bar I can imagine is ok, but it is far away from the 800bar which Robbie shows in his post. And everywhere it is writen that the pressure goes up to 1300bar... so I need to measure when actually driving.
But I can't find any reference values...

Do you have more detailed measurements?

Hi, most engines run at idle 2219 kpa at idle and over 4500kpa at 3000rpm. Good luck Regards Grunty.

Hi Grunty,

Did you mean 22190kPa (221bar) and 45000kPa(450bar)? Otherwise your values would be 22 and 45bar, which is definitely not the case in my car, why then should the high pressure pump deliver up to 1600bar?
I was not aware that there are several version of the D3...

When I change my IID to kPa I get 5digit values (> 100bar)

Just in case some one else is reading this thread and might be confused as I was, in my car the rail pressure sensor is not at the back of the engine but on the left side of the engine close to the injectors. Maybe that's because its an EU4 car.

Hi, just checked on a couple of Disco 3's and the fuel rail pressure varies from just over2551 kpa to 2219 kpa on higher distance vehicles. These pressures are read from my Faultmate MSV server. I think 22.19 bars is 2219 kpa. Hope this helps.
